Explanation

I am wealthy and of high birth; who else is equal to me? I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give in charity, I shall enjoy myself. So they speak, deluded by ignorance. Even religious acts like worship and giving become, in this mind, tools for display and self-congratulation rather than offerings.

This verse closes the first-person boasts of 16.13–15. Commentators draw attention to the fact that yajña and dāna, which were listed among divine qualities in 16.1, appear here too, but motivated by vanity. Shankara explains that such sacrifice is done to outshine others. The verse anticipates 16.17 and chapter 17, where the same outward acts are graded by the inner attitude behind them. The phrase ajñāna-vimohitāḥ sums up the whole monologue as delusion born of ignorance.

Living it today

Before giving or doing a good deed, ask whom it is really for. Generosity aimed at applause quietly feeds the ego instead of the heart.
