Explanation

Hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance, O Partha, belong to the one born with the demonic endowment. In a single verse Krishna sketches the opposite of the long list of divine qualities: a person who shows off a false piety, is proud and self-important, quick to anger, rough in speech and unable to tell right from wrong.

Having described the daivī sampad in 16.1–3, Krishna now names the āsurī sampad, which he will describe at length from 16.6 onwards. Shankara explains dambha as displaying a righteousness one does not have, darpa as pride in wealth or learning, and abhimāna as an exaggerated self-regard. Ajñāna here is not lack of information but a confused sense of what is to be done. Commentators stress that these are tendencies present in every person to some degree, not a fixed caste of people.

Living it today

When you catch yourself performing goodness for an audience or speaking harshly to win, pause. These are the first signs of the demonic nature the Gita warns about.
