Explanation

Krishna reports two opposing opinions. Some thinkers say that all action should be abandoned because it is tainted with fault, since every act involves some harm or bondage. Others say that acts of sacrifice, charity and austerity should never be given up, whatever else one renounces.

The first view is associated with Sankhya and ascetic schools that saw action as inherently binding; the second with the ritualist Mimamsa tradition. Shankara notes that the first opinion suits those who have turned wholly to knowledge, while the second applies to those still bound to duty. Ramanuja and Madhva read Krishna as about to settle the debate by rejecting the abandonment of good works. Modern readers see the verse as an honest presentation of rival schools before the teacher gives his own verdict.
