Explanation
Having laid out the rival opinions, Krishna now offers his own settled view. Listen, he tells Arjuna, to my conclusion about relinquishment. Tyaga, he says, is declared to be of three kinds, a hint that he will analyse it through the three gunas.
The threefold scheme ties this chapter to chapters 14 and 17, where sattva, rajas and tamas were used to sort faith, food, sacrifice and gifts. Shankara notes that Krishna uses tyaga here in the sense of the seeker's relinquishment rather than the knower's total renunciation. Ramanuja reads the threefold division as covering giving up fruits, attachment and the sense of doership. The respectful epithets, best of the Bharatas and tiger among men, mark a solemn turn to the teacher's verdict.
