Explanation

Endowed with a purified intellect, restraining oneself with firm resolve, turning away from sound and the other objects of the senses, and casting off attraction and aversion — the description of the seeker who is ready for Brahman begins here and continues through the next two verses.

Verses 51 to 53 form one sentence describing the person who is fit to become one with Brahman. Dhṛti, resolve, recalls the sāttvika resolve described in 18.33. Shankara stresses giving up sense objects beyond what is needed to sustain the body. Ramanuja reads it as withdrawing the mind from objects so that it can rest on the self. Rāga and dveṣa were named in 3.34 as the two highwaymen on the path, so the verse gathers up earlier teaching.
