Explanation
Sanjaya says: Thus I have heard this wonderful dialogue between Vasudeva and the great-souled Partha, which makes my hair stand on end. The narrator, who has been reporting the conversation to King Dhritarashtra, now steps forward to share his own response to it.
The frame of the Gita returns: Sanjaya, who has been narrating the dialogue to the blind king Dhritarashtra since 1.2, now speaks in his own voice. Calling Arjuna mahātmā, great-souled, honours the student as well as the teacher. Shankara and Ramanuja comment only briefly on these closing verses, treating them as Sanjaya's testimony. Readers note that the closing words are not argument but awe — the right response to what has been heard.
