Explanation
Freed from attachment, fear and anger, absorbed in me and taking refuge in me, many have been purified by the discipline of knowledge and have reached my state of being. The path Krishna describes is not theoretical; many have already walked it.
The verse names three inner obstacles, attachment, fear and anger, that echo the description of the steady-minded sage in 2.56. Shankara takes jñāna-tapas as knowledge itself being the highest austerity, and mad-bhāvam as identity with the Lord, that is, liberation. Ramanuja reads mad-bhāvam as attaining a nature like the Lord's, free from karma, while remaining distinct from him. Either way, the verse offers encouragement: the goal has been reached by many before.
