Explanation
Some offer the senses, such as hearing, into the fires of restraint. Others offer sound and the other sense objects into the fires of the senses. In both cases, mastery over the senses and how they meet the world itself becomes a sacrifice.
Two forms of sense discipline are described. Shankara explains the first as the restraint practised by those who withdraw the senses from their objects, and the second as the practice of those who take in only objects permitted and appropriate, experiencing them without attachment. Ramanuja reads the second similarly: engaging with sense objects while directing the senses away from what is harmful. Both are inward sacrifices, continuing the theme that yajña need not involve physical fire.
