Explanation
The one whose happiness is within, whose delight is within, and whose light is within, that yogi, having become one with Brahman, attains brahma-nirvāṇa, the peace of Brahman. Joy, rest and understanding are all found inside rather than drawn from outside.
Brahma-nirvāṇa appears first in 2.72 and recurs in 5.24 to 5.26. Nirvāṇa literally means extinguishing, the blowing out of restlessness and separate selfhood. Shankara reads brahma-bhūta as becoming Brahman, realising identity with it. Ramanuja reads it as attaining the state of the pure self, which is like Brahman in nature. Scholars note that the Gita shares this vocabulary with early Buddhism, though here the extinguishing is into the fullness of Brahman rather than a mere cessation.
