Explanation
For disciplined seekers who are free from desire and anger, whose minds are controlled and who know the Self, the peace of Brahman is present on every side. It surrounds them both now and after death; it is not far away.
Abhitaḥ can mean on all sides or both here and hereafter, and commentators use both senses. Shankara reads it as: for such seekers liberation is present both while living and after the body falls. Ramanuja takes it as the self being within easy reach of those so disciplined. The verse completes the series on brahma-nirvāṇa and leads into the brief description of meditation in 5.27 and 5.28, which in turn opens chapter 6.
Living it today
Peace is not a distant reward; each time you set down a resentment or a craving, notice how near it already is.
