Explanation
Yoga is hard to attain for one whose mind is uncontrolled; this is my view. But for one whose mind is brought under control and who keeps striving, it can be attained by the right means. Effort and right method together make it possible.
Krishna completes his answer to Arjuna. 6.35 named the two tools, abhyāsa (practice) and vairāgya (dispassion); this verse adds that effort and method matter. The word 'upāyataḥ', by proper means, points back to the instructions of 6.10 to 6.28: place, posture, moderation, gradual settling. Shankara stresses that yoga is not attained by mere wishing but by sustained effort. The tone is honest and hopeful: difficult, yes, but within reach of anyone who tries in the right way.
