Twelve asanas, twelve names of the sun
A single continuous sequence of twelve postures, each paired with a mantra that invokes one aspect of Sūrya — from Mitrāya (the universal friend) to Bhāskarāya (the maker of light). Performed at sunrise, facing east.
Surya Namaskar is yoga's oldest sequence — a flowing cycle of twelve postures that engages every major joint and muscle, co-ordinated with the breath, and sealed to a mantra at each step. Each round takes about a minute. A complete practice is twelve rounds — one for each name of the sun — totalling 144 asanas.
"Inhale into expansion, exhale into surrender." The breath is as much a part of the sadhana as the posture.
Of the twelve mantras, only six are unique — asanas 1 and 12, 2 and 11, 3 and 10, 4 and 9, 5 and 8, 6 and 7 are mirror pairs of posture, but each is given its own name of Sūrya. The sequence is thus a loop that returns the body home as the mantras complete the sun's twelve-faceted revelation.
How to practice
Begin gently — three to six rounds is enough at first. Build up to twelve. The breath matters as much as the posture.
- At sunrise Face east. Practice on an empty stomach, after bathing. Dawn light is traditional and physiologically ideal.
- Breath drives posture Odd postures (1, 3, 5…) on exhale; even postures (2, 4…) on inhale. Never hold the breath — flow it.
- Mantra in mind Chant the mantra silently as the posture holds. One name per asana; one complete round visits all twelve.
- Close in stillness After the final round, lie in śavāsana for two minutes. Let the heat and breath settle. Then rise.
