About Baba Garibnath Temple

Baba Garibnath Dham stands near Purani Bazar in the heart of Muzaffarpur in north Bihar. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Garibnath or Garibeshwar, names that mean the Lord of the poor. The temple is the most important Shiva shrine of the town and the surrounding districts, and because of the crowds it draws in the month of Sawan it is often called the Deoghar of Bihar, after the famous Baidyanath Dham.

Local tradition says the temple is about three hundred years old. The place was once a thick forest with a cluster of peepal trees. When the trees were being cut, a red, blood-like liquid is said to have flowed out, and a large linga was found in the ground. The story goes that Shiva then appeared in a dream to the owner of the land, and regular worship began soon after. These accounts come from local belief rather than written records, and the present building is modern.

The temple is a busy town shrine with a central sanctum for the linga and space around it for devotees to offer water, milk and bel leaves. In Sawan the lanes fill with kanwariyas in saffron, many of whom walk from the Ganga at Pahleja Ghat near Sonpur carrying holy water to pour on the linga, especially on Mondays. Weddings and family rites are also held here through the year, and the evening aarti draws a steady local crowd. Many devotees believe that prayers offered here during Sawan are especially powerful in fulfilling wishes, and visitors come from across north Bihar.
