About Gnana Saraswati Temple, Basar
The Sri Gnana Saraswati Temple stands at Basar (also spelt Basara) on the banks of the Godavari river in Nirmal district of Telangana, close to the Maharashtra border. It is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, learning, music and the arts, and is one of the most famous Saraswati temples in India. Families from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and beyond come here for Akshara Abhyasam, the ceremony in which a young child writes letters for the first time before beginning formal education.
According to tradition, the sage Veda Vyasa came to this peaceful spot on the Godavari after the Mahabharata war, meditated here and installed the image of the goddess; the town's name is said to come from Vasara, linked to Vyasa. A cave near the temple is known as Vyasa's cave. Local accounts say a temple was built here by a ruler of the region in early medieval times and that the shrine was later damaged and restored, with the images reinstated in the 17th century. These accounts come from tradition, and firm early records are limited.
In the sanctum, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped with Goddess Lakshmi beside her, and an image of Mahakali is nearby, so Basar is regarded as an abode of the three great goddesses. The temple complex has been renovated and expanded in modern times, with a gopuram, halls for Akshara Abhyasam and other rituals, and steps leading down to the river. Close by are Vyasa's cave and a rock known as Vedavathi Shila, which devotees tap to hear its ringing sound. Children's laughter, chanting and the sound of slates and pencils give the temple a very joyful atmosphere.
