About Mundeshwari Devi Temple

The Mundeshwari Devi Temple crowns a hill of the Kaimur plateau near Ramgarh village, about 14 km from Bhabua in Bihar's Kaimur district. It is dedicated to Goddess Mundeshwari, a form of Durga, and to Lord Shiva, worshipped as a four-faced linga at the centre of the shrine. Protected by the Archaeological Survey of India since 1915, it is widely described as one of the oldest Hindu temples in India where worship still continues, and draws large numbers of devotees during Navaratri.

The temple's age is debated. An inscription found near the site, naming a ruler called Udayasena, has been dated by scholars to around the late 6th or 7th century CE, while some state bodies have proposed a much earlier date. Historians of temple architecture generally place the surviving sculptures and carved doorways in about the 7th century, and some suggest the present structure was rebuilt later using older parts. Local tradition says the goddess killed the demon Munda here, giving her the name Mundeshwari. A well-known custom is the bloodless offering: a goat is brought before the goddess, sprinkled with consecrated rice, and then released unharmed.

The shrine is built of stone on an unusual octagonal plan, rare among early Indian temples, with doorways and niches on its sides carved with figures of river goddesses, guardians and floral designs. Inside, the chaturmukha (four-faced) Shiva linga stands at the centre, and the image of Goddess Mundeshwari, riding a buffalo, is placed in a niche. Broken sculptures and architectural pieces from older shrines lie around the hilltop. A road and a flight of steps lead up the hill, which gives wide views over the surrounding countryside.
