About Ramappa Temple

The Ramappa Temple, also called the Rudreshwara Temple, stands at Palampet village in Mulugu district, Telangana, near the large Ramappa lake. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Ramalingeswara. In 2021 it was inscribed by UNESCO as the Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple, Telangana, making it the state's first World Heritage Site. It is a living temple where worship continues, and it is regarded as the finest surviving work of Kakatiya architecture.

An inscription at the site records that the temple was built in 1213 CE by Recharla Rudra, a general of the Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva. It is unusual among Indian temples in being popularly known by the name of its chief sculptor, Ramappa, rather than its deity or patron; this is the local tradition. The temple survived wars and a major earthquake in the 17th century, which many attribute to its sandbox foundation, a technique of filling the foundation pit with sand.

The temple stands on a high star-shaped platform and is built of reddish sandstone, with black dolerite used for pillars, beams and bracket figures. The brackets carry the famous madanikas, slender female figures of dancers and musicians carved with great skill and polish. The pillars and ceilings inside show scenes from the epics and dance poses that are said to have inspired later revival of classical dance. The tower is built with very light, porous bricks that are said to float on water. A Nandi pavilion faces the shrine, and smaller temples stand within the walled compound.
