About Ujjaini Mahakali Temple

The Sri Ujjaini Mahakali Temple stands in the busy General Bazaar area of Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad. It is dedicated to the goddess Mahakali, and it is one of the most important goddess temples in the Hyderabad region. For most of the year it is a lively neighbourhood temple where shoppers and local families stop for darshan, but each year during the Ashada month it becomes the focus of the Bonalu festival, when lakhs of devotees come to offer thanks to the goddess. Its name recalls the famous Mahakali shrine at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.

The temple has a clear founding story. In 1813 a cholera epidemic took thousands of lives in the area. A doli bearer named Suriti Appaiah, who was with a military battalion moved from Secunderabad to Ujjain, prayed with his companions at the Mahakali temple there, vowing to install the goddess at home if the epidemic ended. On their return they installed a wooden image of Mahakali in Secunderabad in July 1814, and the temple took shape around 1815. The yearly Bonalu thanksgiving is closely tied to this vow to the goddess who protects her people from disease.

The temple is compact and set among crowded market streets, with a decorated entrance leading to the shrine of the goddess. During Bonalu, women carry decorated pots of cooked food on their heads as offerings to the goddess, accompanied by drums and processions. A notable custom of the festival is the Rangam, held the morning after the main celebrations, when a woman believed to be possessed by the goddess stands on an earthen pot and speaks about the coming year. The streets around the temple fill with music and colour on these days.
