What Gita Jayanti means

Gita Jayanti is the birthday of a book — the only Hindu festival kept for a scripture rather than a deity or a saint. It falls on Mokshada Ekadashi, the bright-fortnight Ekadashi of Margashirsha, the month Krishna himself names in the Gita as the best of months: 'māsānāṃ mārgaśīrṣo'ham' (10.35). Tradition holds that on this day, on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna.

The Gita was not taught in a temple or a forest hermitage but in the middle of a crisis, to a man who had lost his nerve and his sense of duty. That is why it speaks so directly to ordinary life: how to act without being crushed by the result, how to steady the mind, how to see the same Self in all, and how to offer every action to God. Its 700 verses in 18 chapters have been read as a guide to karma, jnana and bhakti — the paths of action, knowledge and devotion — and as one teaching that holds all three together.

The way to keep the day is simple and open to everyone: read the Gita, or at least part of it; reflect on a verse that speaks to you; share it with someone; and, if you keep the Ekadashi vow, fast or eat simply. Many homes and temples recite all eighteen chapters together, and many people gift a copy of the Gita on this day.

The story of Gita Jayanti

The Mahabharata tells that when the Kaurava and Pandava armies stood facing each other at Kurukshetra, Arjuna asked Krishna, his charioteer, to drive between the two armies so he could see whom he must fight. Seeing teachers, grandfathers, cousins and friends on the other side, he was overcome with grief, put down his bow Gandiva and said he would not fight. What Krishna said to him in reply is the Bhagavad Gita — the 'song of the Lord' — found in the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata (chapters 25 to 42).

Krishna does not simply order Arjuna to fight. He teaches him who he truly is — the undying Self that is never born and never dies (2.20); how to act without attachment to the fruit of action (2.47); how the Lord comes in every age to protect the good and restore dharma (4.7–8); and, at the end, the great promise of refuge: 'Give up all dharmas and take refuge in me alone; I will free you from all sins — do not grieve' (18.66). His doubts dispelled, Arjuna says, 'My delusion is destroyed; I will do as you say' (18.73), and takes up his bow.

The story is also told through Sanjaya, who was given divine sight by Vyasa so that he could narrate the whole war to the blind king Dhritarashtra. The Gita opens with Dhritarashtra's question to Sanjaya, and closes with Sanjaya's words: wherever there is Krishna, the lord of yoga, and Arjuna the archer, there are fortune, victory, prosperity and right conduct (18.78).

Gita Jayanti puja vidhi, step by step

A simple way to keep Gita Jayanti at home or with a group. Traditions differ — ISKCON, Gita Press and other sampradayas each have their own customs; follow yours.

What you need

  • A copy of the Bhagavad Gita, placed on a clean cloth or a small stand
  • An image of Krishna as Partha-sarathi (Arjuna's charioteer), or any Krishna image
  • A diya, incense, flowers and tulsi leaves
  • Fruits, milk or another Ekadashi-safe naivedya
  • Copies of the Gita to give, if you wish to gift them

When to do the puja

Gita Jayanti is kept on Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi. Those who fast break it the next morning (Dvadashi parana) at the time given in the Panchang. Timings change by city and year — check the Panchang for your city. See the Panchang for your city.

Steps

  1. Begin with the Gita itself. In the morning, after bathing, offer a flower and a lamp to the book and to Krishna, and recite the Gita dhyana shloka below.
  2. Read. Read as much as you can — the whole Gita, the chapter your family favours, or a few verses with their meaning. Groups often divide the 18 chapters so that the whole text is recited by noon.
  3. Reflect and share. Choose one verse to think about through the day, and share it with family or friends. Many give a copy of the Gita to someone who does not have one.
  4. Keep the Ekadashi vow if you can. Fast or eat only Ekadashi foods — fruits, milk, sabudana, kuttu or singhara — and avoid grains and pulses, as your family does.
  5. Close with aarti. In the evening perform the Gita aarti or a Krishna aarti, chant Krishna's names, and share the prasad. Those who fasted break it after sunrise on Dvadashi.

Offerings & food: Fruits, milk, sabudana, singhade ka halwa, kuttu puri (ekadashi vrat-safe foods)
