Explanation
This teaching should never be spoken by you to one without self-discipline, to one without devotion, to one unwilling to listen, or to one who finds fault with me. Having completed the teaching, Krishna now explains who is ready to receive it and benefit from it.
Krishna now speaks of how the Gita should be shared. The restriction is about receptiveness, not birth or status: teaching given to someone hostile or uninterested only invites ridicule. Shankara explains that the listener should have both austerity and devotion, and should be willing to serve and hear. Ramanuja reads aśuśrūṣu as one who does not wish to hear. Many modern teachers read the verse as practical advice on timing and respect rather than as secrecy.
