Explanation

There is no one among human beings who does me dearer service than such a person, nor will anyone on earth be dearer to me. Krishna places the one who passes on this wisdom to receptive hearts at the very top of all who serve him.

This continues the praise of the one who shares the teaching (18.68). Shankara reads it as saying that among all who serve the Lord, the teacher of this wisdom to the worthy is foremost. Ramanuja likewise. The emphasis falls on the welfare of others: helping another find clarity and peace is treated as the highest service. Gandhi spoke of spreading the Gita's message through one's life rather than through words alone.

Living it today
