Explanation

Have you heard this with a one-pointed mind, O Partha? Has your delusion born of ignorance been destroyed, O Dhananjaya? After eighteen chapters of teaching, Krishna asks Arjuna whether it has truly reached him and cleared the confusion with which he began.

Having finished the teaching, Krishna asks Arjuna to check his own understanding. A good teacher does not simply speak but makes sure the lesson has landed. Shankara comments that the question is asked so that, if Arjuna has not understood, Krishna may explain again. The two names are apt: Partha, son of Pritha, recalls his family bond, and Dhananjaya, winner of wealth, his proven ability. The delusion meant is the confusion of 2.7.

Living it today

After explaining something important, ask whether it actually made sense — and after learning, ask yourself what has really changed.
