About Ranganathaswamy Temple
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple stands on Srirangam, an island between the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers near Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a form of Vishnu reclining on the serpent Adisesha. Revered as the first and foremost of the 108 Divya Desams, it is often called 'Bhuloka Vaikuntham'. Spread over about 156 acres, it is one of the largest functioning Hindu temple complexes in the world, with a whole town living within its walls.
Tradition says the image of Ranganatha was worshipped by Lord Rama's ancestors in Ayodhya and was given to Vibhishana, who set it down at Srirangam, where it chose to remain. The temple was sung by the Alvar saints, and the great teacher Ramanujacharya lived and worked here. It suffered invasions in the fourteenth century, when the deity was taken away for safety, and was restored with the help of Vijayanagara rulers and later dynasties.
The temple has seven concentric enclosures (prakarams) and 21 gopurams. The Rajagopuram on the south, completed in 1987, is about 73 metres tall, one of the tallest in Asia. Inside you will see the golden vimana over the sanctum, the Thousand Pillar Mandapam and the Sesharaya Mandapam with its rearing horse pillars.
