The story of Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha in English

The sahukar's youngest daughter-in-law

Long ago a sahukar (merchant) lived in a town with his seven sons, seven daughters-in-law and one daughter. A few days before Diwali, the seven daughters-in-law went into the forest with their sister-in-law to bring clay for plastering the house.

Where the daughter was digging, a syahu (porcupine) had its burrow under the ground, and without knowing it she killed one of its cubs with her spade. The mother porcupine, Syahu Mata, rose up in grief and anger: "As you have taken my child, I shall bind your womb."

The girl was frightened and begged each of her brothers' wives in turn to take the curse in her place. The six elder ones refused. The youngest thought of how unhappy her sister-in-law and her mother-in-law would be, and agreed to let her own womb be bound instead.

From that day, every child born to the youngest daughter-in-law died within seven days, and in this way she lost seven sons. In her sorrow she asked a pandit what to do. He said: "Serve Surahi, the cow. She is Syahu Mata's friend. When she is pleased she will take you to Syahu Mata, and by her grace your womb will be freed."

So every morning before dawn the youngest daughter-in-law quietly cleaned the cow's shed and gave her fodder and water. The cow wondered who was serving her so faithfully, kept watch one day, and found her. Pleased, she said: "Ask, daughter — what do you wish for?" The young woman folded her hands: "Mother, Syahu Mata has bound my womb. Please take me to her." Surahi set out with her across the seven seas towards Syahu Mata's home.

On the way they rested, tired, beneath a tree. The young woman saw a snake creeping towards the nest of a Garuda bird in its branches, where the bird's chicks lay, and she killed the snake. Just then the mother bird returned, saw blood, and thinking the woman had killed her young, began to peck at her. "I saved your children from a snake," she said. When the bird understood, she was overjoyed, and carried them both on her back to Syahu Mata.

Seeing Surahi, Syahu Mata said, "Sister, you have come after a long time," and added, "my head is full of lice." The young woman lovingly combed her hair and cleaned it. Pleased, Syahu Mata blessed her: "May you have seven sons and seven daughters-in-law." "Mother, my womb is bound — how can I have seven sons?" she replied. Syahu Mata remembered her word and said: "I have given my blessing and I will keep it. Go home — you will find seven sons and seven daughters-in-law. And when you reach home, perform the udyapan of Ahoi Mata."

When she returned, her courtyard was full of seven sons and seven daughters-in-law. She drew seven images of Ahoi, offered seven pans of food, and performed the udyapan of Ahoi Mata. Her home was filled once more with happiness.

O Ahoi Mata — as you freed the womb of the sahukar's youngest daughter-in-law and filled her home, so free all who pray to you, protect every child, and fill every home with joy.

Another telling

In another popular telling, a woman with seven sons went to the forest before Diwali to bring clay for her house, and by mistake her spade killed a porcupine's cub. Through the mother porcupine's curse, all seven of her sons died within a year.

In her grief she told the elder women of the village, who advised her to draw Ahoi Mata with the syahu and its cubs on her wall on Kartik Krishna Ashtami, and to fast and pray for forgiveness with a sincere heart. She kept the fast faithfully, year after year; Ahoi Mata was pleased and her sons were restored to her. Ever since, mothers keep this fast for their children.

Ahoi Ashtami is kept mainly in North India (Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh). The katha is oral tradition and is told in several versions; this is our own retelling of the two most popular ones found in Hindi vrat-katha books. Families often have their own wording — follow your family's way. The katha is retold here in our own words; families and printed booklets tell it with small differences.

How to keep the Ahoi Ashtami vrat

  1. Dawn. Bathe and take a sankalp for the fast, praying for your children. Many mothers keep it nirjala (without water) until evening.
  2. Draw Ahoi Mata. Draw Ahoi Mata on the wall with geru or kumkum, with the syahu, its cubs and seven sons — or put up a printed Ahoi image.
  3. Evening puja. Worship Ahoi Mata with roli, akshat, flowers, a diya and incense. Place a karva or kalash of water beside her and offer puri, halwa and pua.
  4. Katha. Hear or read the Ahoi Mata katha with grains of wheat or rice in your hand, then give the baya (sweets and a gift) to your mother-in-law and touch her feet.
  5. Starrise. When the stars appear, offer water (arghya) to them from the karva and break the fast. Some families wait for moonrise instead — check the Panchang for your city.

Food: The fast is broken in the evening with the puja prasad — puri, halwa, pua or a simple meal.

Children, the elderly, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should keep a lighter fast. Customs differ between families and regions — follow your own tradition.

Udyapan (completing the vrat)

Udyapan (ujman) is usually done when a son is born or married, or when the vowed years are complete. Following the katha, many families draw seven Ahoi images, offer seven pans (kadhai) of food — often puri and halwa — and give the baya and gifts to the mother-in-law or an elder woman of the family. Customs vary; follow your family's tradition.
