The story of Solah Somvar Vrat Katha in English

Once Shiva and Parvati, travelling the earth, came to the city of Amravati in Vidarbha and stayed in its beautiful Shiva temple. To pass the time Parvati wished to play chaupar (a dice game). Just then the temple priest came in. Parvati asked him: "Tell me, who will win this game?" Without thinking, the priest said: "Mahadeva will win."

Parvati won the game. Angry at his careless answer, she cursed the priest with leprosy. Shiva and Parvati went on their way, and the priest suffered greatly.

Some time later, apsaras from heaven came to worship in the same temple. Seeing the priest's condition, they asked the cause and said: "Keep the vrat of sixteen Mondays. Each Monday bathe and worship Shiva; make a churma of wheat flour, ghee and jaggery and divide it in three — offer one part to Shiva, share one among devotees and eat one yourself. On the seventeenth Monday do the udyapan." The priest kept the vrat with faith and was cured.

Later Shiva and Parvati came to the temple again. Seeing the priest healthy, Parvati asked how, and he told her of the sixteen-Monday vrat. At that time Parvati's son Kartikeya had gone far away, displeased with her. Parvati too kept the vrat of sixteen Mondays, and as soon as it was complete, Kartikeya came back to his mother of his own accord.

Kartikeya asked why, learnt of the vrat and kept it himself so that a brahmin friend he had lost touch with would return; the friend soon came back. The friend kept the vrat hoping to marry. One day he reached a city where the king had arranged his daughter's swayamvara: she would marry whoever the royal elephant garlanded. The elephant placed the garland around the brahmin's neck, and he married the princess.

The princess asked her husband what merit had brought him such fortune, and he told her of the sixteen-Monday vrat. She kept it, praying for a son, and was blessed with a fine, virtuous son. When he grew up, he too kept the vrat, hoping for a kingdom, and became king of a realm.

So everyone who kept the sixteen-Monday vrat with faith had their wish fulfilled. Whoever reads or hears this katha receives the grace of Shiva and Parvati.

This is the katha of the Solah Somvar vrat as found in popular Hindi vrat-katha books. Some versions continue with further episodes, such as a king who forgot his queen; the core stories are the ones told here. The katha is retold here in our own words; families and printed booklets tell it with small differences.

How to keep the Solah Somvar vrat

  1. Start on a Monday. Many begin in Shravan, Kartik, Chaitra or Margashirsha, on the first Monday of the bright half. Take a sankalp to keep 16 consecutive Mondays.
  2. Morning worship. Bathe, and worship Shiva and Parvati with water, milk, bilva leaves, white flowers, sandal and a lamp.
  3. Prepare the churma. Make churma of wheat flour, ghee and jaggery (traditionally half a ser). Divide it into three: one for Shiva, one to share, one for yourself.
  4. Katha and aarti. Hear the Solah Somvar katha in the afternoon or evening, then do the aarti.
  5. One meal. Eat only the churma prasad, or one sattvic meal, after the evening puja.

Food: The churma prasad, fruit and milk. Many eat nothing else on the day.

Children, the elderly, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should keep a lighter fast. Customs differ between families and regions — follow your own tradition.

Udyapan (completing the vrat)

The udyapan is on the 17th Monday. Worship Shiva and Parvati with full rites (some do a small havan), make churma of one and a quarter ser of wheat, offer it, and feed and honour brahmins or a married couple as Shiva and Parvati, with clothes and dakshina.

Mantra and aarti

Mantra of Uma and Maheshvara

oṃ umāmaheśvarābhyāṃ namaḥ ||

Om, salutations to Uma and Maheshvara (Parvati and Shiva). Chant it 108 times on each of the sixteen Mondays.
