The story of Somvar Vrat Katha in English
In a certain city lived a rich merchant who lacked nothing except a child, and he and his wife grieved over it. The merchant was devoted to Shiva. Every Monday he fasted, and in the evening lit a lamp and worshipped in the Shiva temple.
Seeing his devotion, Parvati said to Shiva one day: "Lord, he is your true devotee — grant his wish." Shiva replied: "In this world everyone receives the fruit of their own karma. A son is not in his destiny." But when Parvati insisted, Shiva said: "Very well, he shall have a son — but the boy will live only twelve years."
The merchant had heard all this, yet he was neither elated nor downcast, and went on keeping his Monday fast as before. In time a beautiful son was born. When the boy was eleven, the merchant sent him with his maternal uncle to study in Kashi, telling them: "Wherever you stop on the way, perform a yajna and feed brahmins."
They came to a city where the king's daughter was about to be married. The prince she was to marry was blind in one eye. To hide this, his father, seeing the merchant's handsome son, said to the uncle: "Let the boy stand in as the groom for a while; I will pay you well." The uncle agreed.
The merchant's son was married to the princess, but he would not deceive her. At the parting he wrote on her veil: "You have been married to me, but the prince they will send you away with is blind in one eye. I am going to Kashi to study." Reading this, the princess refused to leave with the prince, and the wedding party went home without her.
Uncle and nephew reached Kashi, where the boy studied and the yajnas and charity continued. On the day the boy turned twelve, in the middle of a yajna, he fell ill and died. His uncle wept. Just then Shiva and Parvati were passing by. Hearing the crying, Parvati said: "Lord, this is the merchant's son. Give him life, or his parents too will die of grief." Shiva restored the boy to life.
His studies complete, the boy returned home with his uncle. In the same city the king recognised him and sent the princess with him with honour. At home, the merchant and his wife had vowed to give up their lives if their son did not return. Seeing their son and his bride, their joy knew no bounds. That night Shiva told the merchant in a dream: "Pleased by your Monday fasts and by your hearing of this katha, I have given your son a long life."
Whoever keeps the Monday fast and reads or hears this katha is freed from sorrow and has their wishes fulfilled.
This is the katha found in popular Hindi vrat-katha books for the ordinary Monday fast; it is a folk katha, not taken from a single Purana. The katha is retold here in our own words; families and printed booklets tell it with small differences.
How to keep the Somvar vrat
- Sankalp. On Monday morning bathe, wear clean (preferably white) clothes and take a sankalp for the number of Mondays you will keep — often 16, or through Shravan.
- Worship Shiva and Parvati. Offer water or milk to the Shiva linga, then bilva leaves, white flowers, sandal, akshat, dhatura and a lamp. Worship Parvati too.
- Hear the katha. Read or listen to the Somvar vrat katha, then do the aarti "Om Jai Shiv Omkara".
- Break the fast. Fast until evening and eat once after the evening worship, preferably sattvic food without salt or with rock salt, as your tradition allows.
Food: Fruit, milk and water during the day; one sattvic meal in the evening. Many avoid ordinary salt.
Children, the elderly, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should keep a lighter fast. Customs differ between families and regions — follow your own tradition.
Udyapan (completing the vrat)
After the chosen number of Mondays (often 16), do the udyapan on the last Monday: worship Shiva and Parvati with full rites, offer prasad, feed brahmins or the needy, and give dakshina. Some couples are invited and honoured as Shiva and Parvati.
Mantra and aarti
Panchakshari mantra
oṃ namaḥ śivāya ||
Om, salutations to Shiva. Chant it 108 times on a rudraksha mala during the Monday puja.
