The story of Satyanarayan Vrat Katha in English
Chapter 1 — Narada asks how people may be freed from suffering
At the forest of Naimisharanya, the sage Shaunaka and eighty-eight thousand rishis asked Suta: "In the Kali age, by what vow or austerity can people gain what they long for?" Suta replied: "Narada once asked Vishnu this very question. Listen to what the Lord told him."
Wandering the earth, Narada saw people suffering in many ways because of their deeds. He went to Vishnu in the ocean of milk and asked: "Lord, tell me some simple way by which people may be freed from their sorrows." Vishnu said: "Narada, let them keep the vrat of Satyanarayan. It brings happiness and prosperity in this life and liberation at the end."
The Lord explained how: "On any day, and especially on Purnima, worship Satyanarayan in the evening with devotion and faith. Offer bananas, and a prasad of ghee, milk, wheat flour (or rice flour) and sugar — sapad, measured one and a quarter times. Hear the katha with family and friends, share the prasad, and take it yourself. Whoever does this has their wishes fulfilled."
Chapter 2 — The poor brahmin and the woodcutter
In the city of Kashi lived a very poor brahmin named Shatananda, who lived by begging. The Lord took pity on him and came to him in the form of an old brahmin. "Keep the vrat of Satyanarayan and your poverty will end," he said, explained the vidhi, and vanished.
Shatananda resolved to keep the vrat with whatever alms he received the next day. That day he was given more than ever before. With his relatives he worshipped Satyanarayan with faith. Slowly all his troubles ended; he became prosperous and kept the vrat all his life.
One day, while Shatananda was performing the katha, a thirsty woodcutter came by and asked what was happening. The brahmin told him the glory of the vrat. The woodcutter took the prasad and water and resolved: "With the money I get for my wood today, I too will keep this vrat." That day he was paid twice the usual price. He kept the vrat and his life too became happy.
Chapter 3 — King Ulkamukh, the merchant and his vow
Long ago there was a righteous king named Ulkamukh. One day he and his queen were keeping the Satyanarayan vrat on a riverbank when a merchant named Sadhu arrived in his boat and asked what vow they were keeping. The king told him it was the vrat of Satyanarayan, kept for children and happiness.
Sadhu had no children. He vowed: "If I am blessed with a child, I too will keep this vrat." In time his wife Lilavati gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Kalavati. Lilavati reminded him of his vow, but he said: "I will do it at her wedding."
When Kalavati grew up she was married to a worthy merchant's son — and again Sadhu forgot his vow. The Lord was displeased. Sadhu went with his son-in-law to trade in the city of Ratnasarpur, ruled by King Chandraketu. There the king's treasure was stolen; the frightened thieves dropped it near the merchants' boat, and the king's soldiers threw both father-in-law and son-in-law into prison as thieves.
At home, Lilavati and Kalavati were robbed of everything and went hungry. One day Kalavati saw the Satyanarayan katha being held in another house, took the prasad and told her mother. Lilavati, full of regret, kept the vrat with faith and prayed for her husband and son-in-law to return. The Lord was pleased and told King Chandraketu in a dream to free the two innocent merchants. The king released them and sent them home with gifts.
Chapter 4 — The boat of leaves and the forgotten prasad
On the way home the Lord met them on the riverbank in the form of an ascetic with a staff and asked: "What is in your boat?" Proud, Sadhu lied: "Only creepers and leaves." "So be it," said the ascetic, and went away. When Sadhu looked into the boat, the treasure had indeed turned into creepers and leaves.
His son-in-law told him this was the result of the ascetic's words. The two ran after the ascetic and begged forgiveness. "I lied out of arrogance; forgive me," said Sadhu. The ascetic replied: "You promised again and again to keep the vrat of Satyanarayan and forgot each time — that is why you suffered." Sadhu promised to keep it, and the boat was filled with treasure again.
Near the city, Sadhu sent word home. Lilavati and Kalavati were in the middle of the Satyanarayan katha. On hearing that her husband had come, Kalavati ran out without taking the prasad. Displeased at this disrespect to the prasad, the Lord let the boat sink with her husband in it.
Kalavati wept. Then a voice from the sky said: "You left the prasad behind. Go back and take it, and your husband will return." Kalavati went home, took the prasad with reverence, came back — and found the boat at the bank with her husband safe. Together they all kept the Satyanarayan vrat with proper vidhi, and kept it all their lives.
Chapter 5 — King Tungadhwaj and the cowherds' prasad
There was a king named Tungadhwaj. Returning from a hunt, he stopped in a forest where cowherds were devoutly worshipping Satyanarayan. Proud, the king neither joined the puja nor bowed. When the cowherds offered him prasad, he left it lying there and went away.
On reaching his capital he found everything ruined: his wealth was gone and his hundred sons were in danger. He understood that this was the result of disrespecting Satyanarayan's prasad. He went back to the same forest, sat with the cowherds, worshipped with faith and took the prasad.
By the Lord's grace his wealth, family and kingdom were restored. He kept the vrat all his life and at the end reached the world of Truth. Suta concluded: "Whoever keeps this rare vrat and hears the katha gains prosperity; the poor become rich, the imprisoned are freed, the fearful become fearless, and at the end they reach Vaikuntha."
The Satyanarayan katha is traditionally said to come from the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana, though it is not found in all manuscripts of that Purana; it became one of the most widely performed home pujas in India from about the 18th–19th century. The katha is retold here in our own words; families and printed booklets tell it with small differences.
How to keep the Satyanarayan vrat and puja
- Choose the day. Purnima is most common; it is also done on Ekadashi, Sankranti, at griha pravesh, after a wedding or birth, or when a wish is fulfilled. The puja is usually in the evening.
- Prepare the place. Clean the puja area, make a small mandap with banana stems or leaves, place a kalash, and an image of Vishnu or Satyanarayan on a red or yellow cloth. Begin with worship of Ganesha and the navagrahas.
- Worship Satyanarayan. Offer panchamrit, tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, fruit and the sapad prasad (sheera of semolina or wheat flour, ghee, sugar, milk and banana — in the measure of one and a quarter).
- Hear the katha. Read or listen to all five chapters with family and friends, holding akshat and flowers.
- Aarti and prasad. Do the aarti "Om Jai Jagdish Hare" or "Jai Lakshmi Ramana", offer the akshat and flowers, and share the prasad with everyone. Never refuse or leave the prasad — that is the lesson of chapters 4 and 5.
Food: Many keep a fast until the puja and break it with the prasad; others simply eat sattvic food that day.
Children, the elderly, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should keep a lighter fast. Customs differ between families and regions — follow your own tradition.
Udyapan (completing the vrat)
The Satyanarayan puja is complete in itself and has no separate udyapan. Families who keep it every Purnima simply continue; some feed brahmins or the needy and give dakshina at the end of a year.
Mantra and aarti
Satyanarayan mantra
oṃ śrī satyanārāyaṇāya namaḥ ||
Om, salutations to Shri Satyanarayan, the Lord who is Truth. Chant it 108 times during the puja.
