On Vijayadashami 1939, M. S. Golwalkar gave the annual address at the gathering in Nagpur, where the chief guest was B. C. Chatterjee (presided). This page summarises what was reported about it.
The day
- Date: 22 October 1939 — the calendar date of Vijayadashami; our sources do not record the exact day of the gathering
- Place: Nagpur
- Address by: M. S. Golwalkar (the head of the organisation at the time was Dr K. B. Hedgewar)
- Chief guest: B. C. Chatterjee (presided)
- Note: Golwalkar spoke as general secretary (sarkaryavah); Hedgewar was still head
What the address covered
Seshadri says Hedgewar had Golwalkar, appointed Sarkaryavah in August 1939, speak at public occasions that year, including the Dasara function at Nagpur presided over by B. C. Chatterjee. The Shri Guruji Samagra has a summary of Golwalkar's Shastra Puja talk. He marked fourteen years of Sangh work and said the Sangh would pursue Hindu organisation without joining any political party. He called it a 'military' body only in an old sense of individual self-merger in a cause, and said it stressed national character over military training.
Context
Golwalkar's first recorded Vijayadashami-season address in Nagpur, given as Sarkaryavah. This was Hedgewar's last Vijayadashami (he died 21 June 1940).
How sure is this?
This account rests mainly on one source, listed below; details may be incomplete. For these years the main source is the organisation's own compilation of Golwalkar's talks (Shri Guruji Samagra), which prints edited summaries rather than verbatim transcripts.
