The day
- Date: 5 October 1946 — the calendar date of Vijayadashami; our sources do not record the exact day of the gathering
- Place: Nagpur
- Address by: M. S. Golwalkar
What the address covered
Speaking at the Nagpur Vijayadashami a few months after the 1946 communal violence, Golwalkar attacked the call for non-resistance, which both the Samagra and Palkar's biography record. Using Mahmud of Ghazni and Arjuna's doubts as examples, he said leaders had often failed to act out of confusion. He called non-resistance cowardice, said conflict was unavoidable, and claimed a natural right of self-defence for individuals and society. He rejected a published statement that protection was the government's job alone. Palkar presents the speech as a reaction to the Dhaka, Noakhali and Calcutta violence.
Context
A pointed rejection of non-resistance amid the 1946 communal violence. Critics have cited speeches like this as communal; this file records the content only.
