About Saraswati

In the Rig Veda she is first a great river and a goddess of speech (Vak); later she becomes the consort of Brahma, the creator, giving the gift of knowledge to the world he made. Students, musicians, writers and teachers pray to her before beginning study or performance.

Vasant Panchami is her day, when children are often taught their first letters (vidyarambh) and books and instruments are placed before her. In South India she is honoured on the ninth day of Navratri, Saraswati Puja.
