About Shiva

He is worshipped above all as the linga, the formless sign of the infinite, and the twelve Jyotirlingas are among the holiest places in India. His forms include Nataraja, the cosmic dancer; Neelkantha, who held the poison from the churning of the ocean in his throat; and Mahamrityunjaya, the conqueror of death.

The crescent moon, the Ganga flowing from his matted hair, the third eye, the trident, the damaru and the serpent around his neck each carry meaning in Shaiva tradition. Mondays, the month of Shravan and Maha Shivratri are his special times.

Frequently asked questions

What is the meaning of Om Namah Shivaya?

It means 'salutations to Shiva'. Na-mah-shi-va-ya are the five syllables of the Panchakshari mantra, which Shaiva tradition links to the five elements. It is chanted by anyone, at any time, without special initiation.

Why is a Shivalinga worshipped instead of an image?

The linga is a sign (linga) of Shiva who is beyond form. The Shiva Purana tells how Shiva appeared as an endless column of light, and the linga represents that infinite, formless reality.

What is offered to Shiva?

Water, milk, bel (bilva) leaves, dhatura, white flowers, sandal paste and ash are traditional. Ketaki and tulsi are usually not offered to Shiva, by tradition.
