What Shiva Mantras means
Shiva's mantras range from the five-syllable "Om Namah Shivaya", the heart of Shaiva devotion, to the Rigvedic Mahamrityunjaya prayer for freedom from death. The Rudra Gayatri is from the Mahanarayana Upanishad; "Karpura gauram" is sung at the end of every aarti in North India, picturing Shiva white as camphor with Bhavani beside him in the lotus of the heart.
The opening verses of Tulsidas's Rudrashtakam and the Lingashtakam praise Shiva as formless consciousness and as the linga worshipped by Brahma and Vishnu.
