What Surya Mantras means
Surya is the one deity everyone can see, and his worship at sunrise is among the oldest Hindu practices. The twelve names — Mitra, Ravi, Surya, Bhanu and the rest — are chanted one with each round of Surya Namaskar; the arghya mantra "Ehi Surya sahasramsho" is said while pouring water to the rising sun.
"Japakusuma" is Surya's verse in the Navagraha Stotra; the Surya Gayatri and the seed mantra are used in daily japa and in Navagraha worship; and the Aditya Hridayam verse is from the hymn the sage Agastya taught Rama before his battle with Ravana.
How to chant Surya Mantras
- WhenAt sunrise, facing the sun; on Sundays, Makar Sankranti, Ratha Saptami and Chhath
- Count108 times on a mala for one mantra, or recite each verse once
- MalaRudraksha or red sandalwood
- FacingEast, towards the rising sun
- Choose one. Pick the one mantra that speaks to you and chant it regularly; the others can be recited once each as a prayer.
- Prepare. Wash, sit on a clean mat with the spine straight, and light a lamp before the deity if you can.
- Chant with attention. Pronounce each syllable clearly, aloud, softly or in the mind; attention matters more than speed.
- Keep count. Move one bead per repetition without crossing the head bead; turn the mala to continue.
- Close. Sit quietly for a moment and offer the japa to the deity.
Simple name mantras and shlokas are chanted freely. Seed (beej) mantras are traditionally taken from a guru before long japa; follow your family or teacher.
Where Surya Mantras comes from
Sun worship runs from the Rigveda (the Gayatri to Savitr and many hymns to Surya) through the Ramayana (the Aditya Hridayam in the Yuddha Kanda) to the Puranas and the Navagraha tradition. The twelve names used in Surya Namaskar are a traditional sequence taught in yoga classes and in the daily Surya Namaskar of the shakha.
