What Durga Mantras means

Most of the Devi's mantras come from the Durga Saptashati itself. "Ya Devi sarvabhuteshu" salutes the goddess who dwells in every being as power, intelligence, forgiveness and more; "Sarva mangala mangalye" and "Sharanagata dinarta" are from the hymn the gods sing after her victory over Shumbha; and "Sarvabadha vinirmukto" is the Devi's own promise in the twelfth chapter.

The Navarna mantra is the nine-syllable heart of the Saptashati tradition, chanted with the full text in Navratri; "Jayanti mangala kali" from the Argala Stotram lists her names as the victorious, the auspicious, the dark one and the forgiving.

How to chant Durga Mantras

  • WhenDuring Navratri, on Ashtami, Tuesdays and Fridays, and in times of danger or illness
  • Count108 times on a mala for one mantra, or recite each verse once
  • MalaRed sandalwood, rudraksha or crystal

  1. Choose one. Pick the one mantra that speaks to you and chant it regularly; the others can be recited once each as a prayer.
  2. Prepare. Wash, sit on a clean mat with the spine straight, and light a lamp before the deity if you can.
  3. Chant with attention. Pronounce each syllable clearly, aloud, softly or in the mind; attention matters more than speed.
  4. Keep count. Move one bead per repetition without crossing the head bead; turn the mala to continue.
  5. Close. Sit quietly for a moment and offer the japa to the deity.

The Navarna mantra is traditionally received from a guru before regular japa; the shlokas from the Saptashati are recited freely.

Where Durga Mantras comes from

The Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati), chapters 81–93 of the Markandeya Purana, is the source of most of these verses. The Argala Stotram is recited before it, and the Navarna mantra is part of its ritual of recitation. The Durga Gayatri appears in an older form in the Taittiriya Aranyaka (10.1).
