What Mantras for Protection means
When devotees are afraid — of illness, danger, enemies or the unknown — they turn to the protecting forms of God. Narasimha, who burst from a pillar to save the child Prahlada, is the great protector of devotees; Hanuman removes fear and evil; the Devi of the Saptashati promises to free from every obstacle all who take refuge in her.
Each of these mantras is, at heart, an act of refuge (sharanagati): "I take refuge in the messenger of Rama", "O you who save those who come to your refuge".
