nirvighnaṃ kuru me deva sarvakāryeṣu sarvadā ||

    हे वक्रतुण्ड, विशालकाय, करोड़ों सूर्यों के समान तेजस्वी देव — मेरे सभी कार्य सदा निर्विघ्न करें।

O Lord with the curved trunk and mighty body, radiant as a crore suns — make all my work free of obstacles, always.

I bow to the lotus feet of the Lord of obstacles — elephant-faced, served by the ganas, who enjoys the wood-apple and jambu fruit; the son of Uma, the destroyer of sorrow.

  6. Shuklambaradharam#

Meditate on the all-pervading one clad in white, moon-coloured, four-armed, with a gracious face — for the removal of all obstacles. (Recited before every rite in South India.)

What Ganesh Mantras means

Ganesha is worshipped first at the start of every puja, journey or new work, so his mantras are the most often chanted of all. The simplest is the mool mantra "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah", built on "gam", his seed sound; "Vakratunda Mahakaya" is the verse every child learns; the Ganesha Gayatri comes from the Ganapati Atharvashirsha.

The oldest is the Rigvedic hymn "Gananam tva ganapatim havamahe" (2.23.1), addressed to Brahmanaspati as lord of the hosts and used ever since to invoke Ganesha. The twelve names — Sumukha, Ekadanta, Kapila and the rest — are recited as a protective litany at the start of study, marriage, travel and new ventures.

How to chant Ganesh Mantras

  • WhenBefore any new work, study or journey; on Wednesdays and Chaturthi; during Ganeshotsav
  • Count108 times on a mala for one mantra, or recite each verse once
  • MalaRed sandalwood or rudraksha
  • FacingEast or north
  1. Choose one. Pick the one mantra that speaks to you and chant it regularly; the others can be recited once each as a prayer.
  2. Prepare. Wash, sit on a clean mat with the spine straight, and light a lamp before the deity if you can.
  3. Chant with attention. Pronounce each syllable clearly, aloud, softly or in the mind; attention matters more than speed.
  4. Keep count. Move one bead per repetition without crossing the head bead; turn the mala to continue.
  5. Close. Sit quietly for a moment and offer the japa to the deity.

Simple name mantras and shlokas are chanted freely. Seed (beej) mantras are traditionally taken from a guru before long japa; follow your family or teacher.

Where Ganesh Mantras comes from

Ganesha's mantras come from three layers of tradition: the Rigveda (the Gananam tva hymn), the Ganapati Atharvashirsha (the Gayatri and the seed sound "gam"), and the Puranic and stotra literature (the twelve names, the dhyana verses).

Shuklambaradharam is technically a dhyana of Vishnu as the all-pervading one, but across South India it is recited to Ganesha before every rite.
