May That protect me; may That protect the speaker. Om, peace, peace, peace.

First pronounce 'ga', the first sound of 'gana', then 'a', the first of all letters, then the nasal sound, adorned with the crescent and joined with Om. This is the form of your mantra: 'g' is its first part, 'a' the middle, the nasal the last, the bindu above; the nada joins them, and their joining is the samhita. This is the Ganesha Vidya. Its seer is Ganaka, its metre Nichrid Gayatri, its deity Ganapati. Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.

One-tusked and four-armed, holding the noose and the goad, the tusk and the gesture of blessing, with the mouse on his banner; red, big-bellied, with ears like winnowing fans, clad in red, his body anointed with red sandal, worshipped with red flowers — the god compassionate to his devotees, the cause of the world, imperishable, who appeared at the beginning of creation, beyond Prakriti and Purusha. Whoever meditates on him thus every day is a yogi, the best of yogis.

Whoever studies this Atharvashirsha becomes fit to realise Brahman, prospers in every way, is not hindered by any obstacle, and is freed from the five great sins. Recited in the evening it removes the sins of the day; recited in the morning, the sins of the night; recited morning and evening, one becomes free of sin. Recited everywhere, one is free of obstacles and gains dharma, artha, kama and moksha. This Atharvashirsha should not be given to one who is not a disciple; one who gives it out of delusion incurs sin. Whatever wish one recites it for a thousand times, that wish one fulfils by it.

Having eight brahmanas learn it well, one becomes radiant as the sun. Chanting it during a solar eclipse, on the bank of a great river or before a sacred image, one masters the mantra and is freed from great obstacles, great faults and great sins; one becomes all-knowing, all-knowing. Whoever knows this — so says the Upanishad.
