    abhyadhāvanniśumbho'tha mukhyayāsurasenayā ||

    अपनी विशाल सेना को मरते देखकर क्रोध से भरा निशुम्भ असुरों की प्रधान सेना लेकर आगे दौड़ा।

    Seeing his great army being slaughtered, Nishumbha, burning with indignation, rushed forward with the pick of the asura army.

  5. Shloka 5#

    Before him, behind him and on both sides came great asuras, biting their lips in anger, to kill the Goddess.

  6. Shloka 6#

    nihantuṃ caṇḍikāṃ kopātkṛtvā yuddhaṃ tu mātṛbhiḥ ||

    The mighty Shumbha too came, surrounded by his own forces, to slay Chandika in his fury, after battling with the Mothers.

  7. Shloka 7#

    ततो युद्धमतीवासीद्देव्या शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ।

    śaravarṣamatīvograṃ meghayoriva varṣatoḥ ||

    तब देवी का शुम्भ और निशुम्भ से घोर युद्ध हुआ; वे दोनों बरसते हुए दो मेघों की तरह भयंकर बाणों की वर्षा करने लगे।

    Then a fierce battle raged between the Goddess and Shumbha and Nishumbha, who loosed terrible showers of arrows like two clouds pouring rain.

  8. Shloka 8#

    Chandika cut down the arrows they shot with swarms of her own, and struck the two asura lords on their limbs with volleys of weapons.

  9. Shloka 9#

    निशुम्भो निशितं खड्गं चर्म चादाय सुप्रभम् ।

    atāḍayanmūrdhni siṃhaṃ devyā vāhanamuttamam ||

    निशुम्भ ने तीखी तलवार और चमकती ढाल लेकर देवी के श्रेष्ठ वाहन सिंह के मस्तक पर प्रहार किया।

    Nishumbha, taking a sharp sword and a gleaming shield, struck the lion, the Goddess's noble mount, on the head.

  10. Shloka 10#

    When her mount was struck, the Goddess quickly cut Nishumbha's fine sword with a razor-edged arrow, and his shield marked with eight moons.

  11. Shloka 11#

    छिन्ने चर्मणि खड्गे च शक्तिं चिक्षेप सोऽसुरः ।

    tāmapyasya dvidhā cakre cakreṇābhimukhāgatām ||

    ढाल और तलवार कट जाने पर उस असुर ने शक्ति चलाई; सामने आती हुई उस शक्ति के भी देवी ने चक्र से दो टुकड़े कर दिए।

    With shield and sword cut, the asura hurled a spear; as it came at her, she split that too in two with her discus.

  12. Shloka 12#

    कोपाध्मातो निशुम्भोऽथ शूलं जग्राह दानवः ।
    आयातं मुष्टिपातेन देवी तच्चाप्यचूर्णयत् ॥

    kopādhmāto niśumbho'tha śūlaṃ jagrāha dānavaḥ |
    āyātaṃ muṣṭipātena devī taccāpyacūrṇayat ||

    क्रोध से भरकर दानव निशुम्भ ने त्रिशूल उठाया; आते हुए उस त्रिशूल को भी देवी ने मुक्के के प्रहार से चूर-चूर कर दिया।

    Swelling with rage, the danava Nishumbha seized a trident; as it came, the Goddess crushed it with a blow of her fist.

  13. Shloka 13#

    sāpi devyā triśūlena bhinnā bhasmatvamāgatā ||

    Then he took up a mace and hurled it at Chandika; split by the Goddess's trident, it turned to ashes.

  14. Shloka 14#

    ततः परशुहस्तं तमायान्तं दैत्यपुङ्गवम् ।

    āhatya devī bāṇaughairapātayata bhūtale ||

    तब फरसा हाथ में लेकर आते हुए उस दैत्यश्रेष्ठ को देवी ने बाणों के समूह से मारकर धरती पर गिरा दिया।

    As that bull among daityas came at her, axe in hand, the Goddess struck him with a flood of arrows and felled him to the ground.

  15. Shloka 15#

    भयंकर पराक्रमी भाई निशुम्भ के धरती पर गिरते ही शुम्भ अत्यन्त क्रोधित होकर अम्बिका को मारने दौड़ा।

    When his brother Nishumbha, of terrible valour, had fallen to the earth, Shumbha, utterly enraged, rushed to kill Ambika.

    रथ पर खड़ा, आठ अतुलनीय भुजाओं में बड़े-बड़े शस्त्र ऊँचे उठाए हुए वह सारे आकाश को घेरता हुआ शोभा पा रहा था।

    Standing in his chariot, with great weapons raised high in eight matchless arms, he seemed to fill the whole sky.

    jyāśabdaṃ cāpi dhanuṣaścakārātīva duḥsaham ||

    उसे आते देखकर देवी ने शंख बजाया और धनुष की असहनीय टंकार की।

    Seeing him come, the Goddess blew her conch and twanged her bowstring with a sound hard to bear.

  18. Shloka 18#

    पूरयामास ककुभो निजघण्टास्वनेन च ।
    समस्तदैत्यसैन्यानां तेजोवधविधायिना ॥

    samastadaityasainyānāṃ tejovadhavidhāyinā ||

    उन्होंने अपने घण्टे की ध्वनि से दिशाओं को भर दिया, जो सारी दैत्य-सेनाओं का तेज नष्ट कर देती है।

    pūrayāmāsa gaganaṃ gāṃ tathaiva diśo daśa ||

    तब सिंह ने अपनी गर्जना से, जिससे बड़े-बड़े हाथियों का मद उतर जाता है, आकाश, पृथ्वी और दसों दिशाओं को भर दिया।

    फिर काली ने आकाश में उछलकर दोनों हाथों से पृथ्वी पर प्रहार किया; उस नाद से पहले के सब शब्द दब गए।

    Then Kali, leaping into the sky, struck the earth with both hands, and with that sound all the earlier sounds were drowned.

  21. Shloka 21#

What Durga Saptashati Chapter 9 means

Nishumbha, Shumbha's younger brother, attacks with his army. After a fierce battle, the Goddess strikes him down with her trident and sword. A second figure rises from his heart, and she beheads it. The Matrikas destroy the rest of his army.

How to chant Durga Saptashati Chapter 9

  • PartUttama charitra (last episode, chapters 5–13)
  • Presiding formMahasaraswati
  • WhenNavratri (Chaitra and Sharad), Ashtami, Fridays
  1. Prepare. Bathe, sit facing the Goddess on a clean (often red) cloth, and light a ghee lamp. Keep the book on a stand, not on the floor or your lap.
  2. Continue from the previous chapter. If you are reading the whole text, take up where you stopped; many read one or more chapters each day of Navratri.
  3. Recite clearly. Read without hurrying and without stopping in the middle of a chapter. If you cannot read Sanskrit fluently, read the Hindi or English meaning alongside.
  4. Close. At the end of your day's reading, offer flowers and do the aarti.

A common Navratri plan: day 1 — chapter 1; day 2 — chapters 2–3; day 3 — chapter 4; day 4 — chapters 5–8; day 5 — chapters 9–10; day 6 — chapter 11; day 7 — chapters 12–13 (traditions differ). Others read all thirteen chapters in one sitting.
