    ततः सुरगणाः सर्वे देव्या इन्द्रपुरोगमाः ।
    स्तुतिमारेभिरे कर्तुं निहते महिषासुरे ॥

    ṛṣiruvāca
    tataḥ suragaṇāḥ sarve devyā indrapurogamāḥ |
    stutimārebhire kartuṃ nihate mahiṣāsure ||

    ऋषि बोले: महिषासुर के मारे जाने पर इन्द्र आदि सब देवगण देवी की स्तुति करने लगे।

    The sage said: When Mahishasura had been slain, all the hosts of the gods, led by Indra, began to praise the Goddess.

    शक्रादयः सुरगणा निहतेऽतिवीर्ये
    तस्मिन् दुरात्मनि सुरारिबले च देव्या ।
    तां तुष्टुवुः प्रणतिनम्रशिरोधरांसा
    वाग्भिः प्रहर्षपुलकोद्गमचारुदेहाः ॥

    śakrādayaḥ suragaṇā nihate'tivīrye
    tasmin durātmani surāribale ca devyā |
    tāṃ tuṣṭuvuḥ praṇatinamraśirodharāṃsā
    vāgbhiḥ praharṣapulakodgamacārudehāḥ ||

    जब देवी ने उस अत्यन्त पराक्रमी दुरात्मा और देवशत्रुओं की सेना का संहार कर दिया, तब इन्द्र आदि देवगण प्रणाम से झुकी गर्दन और कन्धों के साथ, हर्ष से पुलकित सुन्दर शरीर वाले होकर, वाणी से उनकी स्तुति करने लगे।

    When that exceedingly powerful, wicked one and the army of the enemies of the gods had been slain by the Goddess, Indra and the hosts of gods praised her with words — their necks and shoulders bowed in reverence, their bodies thrilling with joy.

    देवा ऊचुः
    देव्या यया ततमिदं जगदात्मशक्त्या
    निःशेषदेवगणशक्तिसमूहमूर्त्या ।
    तामम्बिकामखिलदेवमर्षिपूज्यां
    भक्त्या नताः स्म विदधातु शुभानि सा नः ॥

    devā ūcuḥ
    devyā yayā tatamidaṃ jagadātmaśaktyā
    niḥśeṣadevagaṇaśaktisamūhamūrtyā |
    tāmambikāmakhiladevamarṣipūjyāṃ
    bhaktyā natāḥ sma vidadhātu śubhāni sā naḥ ||

    देवता बोले: जिन देवी ने अपनी शक्ति से इस जगत को व्याप्त कर रखा है, जिनका स्वरूप समस्त देवगणों की शक्तियों का समूह है, उन सब देवताओं और महर्षियों द्वारा पूजनीय अम्बिका को हम भक्तिपूर्वक प्रणाम करते हैं; वे हमारा कल्याण करें।

    The gods said: We bow in devotion to Ambika, worshipped by all the gods and great sages — the Goddess who pervades this world by her own power, whose form is the gathered power of all the hosts of gods. May she grant us all that is auspicious.

    यस्याः प्रभावमतुलं भगवाननन्तो
    ब्रह्मा हरश्च नहि वक्तुमलं बलं च ।
    सा चण्डिकाखिलजगत्परिपालनाय
    नाशाय चाशुभभयस्य मतिं करोतु ॥

    yasyāḥ prabhāvamatulaṃ bhagavānananto
    brahmā haraśca nahi vaktumalaṃ balaṃ ca |
    sā caṇḍikākhilajagatparipālanāya
    nāśāya cāśubhabhayasya matiṃ karotu ||

    जिनके अनुपम प्रभाव और बल का वर्णन भगवान अनन्त (शेष), ब्रह्मा और शिव भी नहीं कर सकते, वे चण्डिका सम्पूर्ण जगत के पालन और अशुभ भय के नाश का विचार करें।

    She whose matchless glory and strength even Bhagavan Ananta, Brahma and Hara cannot describe — may that Chandika set her mind on protecting the whole world and destroying the fear of evil.

  5. Shloka 5#

    yā śrīḥ svayaṃ sukṛtināṃ bhavaneṣvalakṣmīḥ
    pāpātmanāṃ kṛtadhiyāṃ hṛdayeṣu buddhiḥ |
    śraddhāṃ satāṃ kulajanaprabhavasya lajjā
    tāṃ tvāṃ natāḥ sma paripālaya devi viśvam ||

    You who are prosperity itself in the homes of the virtuous and misfortune in the homes of the wicked; intelligence in the hearts of the wise; faith in the good; and modesty in those of noble birth — to you we bow. O Goddess, protect the universe.

  6. Shloka 6#

    सर्वेषु देव्यसुरदेवगणादिकेषु ॥

    kiṃ varṇayāma tava rūpamacintyametat
    kiṃ cātivīryamasurakṣayakāri bhūri |
    kiṃ cāhaveṣu caritāni tavādbhutāni
    sarveṣu devyasuradevagaṇādikeṣu ||

    हे देवि! आपके इस अचिन्त्य रूप का, असुरों का नाश करने वाले आपके महान पराक्रम का, और समस्त देवताओं तथा असुरों के बीच युद्धों में किए गए आपके अद्भुत चरित्रों का हम क्या वर्णन करें?

    How can we describe your form, which is beyond thought? Or your great valour that destroys the asuras? Or the wondrous deeds you have done in battle among all the hosts of asuras and gods?

  7. Shloka 7#

    अव्याकृता हि परमा प्रकृतिस्त्वमाद्या ॥

    hetuḥ samastajagatāṃ triguṇāpi doṣair
    na jñāyase hariharādibhirapyapārā |
    sarvāśrayākhilamidaṃ jagadaṃśabhūtam
    avyākṛtā hi paramā prakṛtistvamādyā ||

    आप समस्त जगत की कारण हैं; तीनों गुणों वाली होकर भी उनके दोषों से रहित हैं; विष्णु और शिव आदि भी आपको पूरी तरह नहीं जान पाते; आप अपार और सबकी आश्रय हैं; यह सारा जगत आपका एक अंश मात्र है, क्योंकि आप ही अव्याकृत, परम, आदि प्रकृति हैं।

    You are the cause of all the worlds; though made of the three gunas, you are untouched by their faults; you are unknown even to Hari, Hara and the rest; boundless, the refuge of all — this whole world is but a fraction of you, for you are the supreme, primordial, unmanifest Prakriti.

  8. Shloka 8#

    yasyāḥ samastasuratā samudīraṇena
    tṛptiṃ prayānti sakaleṣu makheṣu devi |
    svāhāsi vai pitṛgaṇasya ca tṛptihetur
    uccāryase tvamata eva janaiḥ svadhā ca ||

    O Goddess, you are Svaha, by whose utterance all the gods are satisfied in every sacrifice; and you are Svadha, the cause of the satisfaction of the ancestors — therefore people chant your names.

  9. Shloka 9#

    yā muktiheturavicintyamahāvratā tvam
    abhyasyase suniyatendriyatattvasāraiḥ |
    mokṣārthibhirmunibhirastasamastadoṣair
    vidyāsi sā bhagavatī paramā hi devi ||

    O Goddess, you are the supreme Bhagavati, the knowledge that is the cause of liberation, of inconceivable great vows, practised by sages who seek liberation, who have mastered their senses, hold to the essence of truth and are free of all faults.

  10. Shloka 10#

    वार्ता च सर्वजगतां परमार्तिहन्त्री ॥

    śabdātmikā suvimalargyajuṣāṃ nidhānam
    udgītharamyapadapāṭhavatāṃ ca sāmnām |
    devī trayī bhagavatī bhavabhāvanāya
    vārtā ca sarvajagatāṃ paramārtihantrī ||

    आप शब्दस्वरूपा हैं, अत्यन्त निर्मल ऋग्वेद और यजुर्वेद तथा उद्गीथ से रमणीय पदों वाले सामवेद का आधार हैं; आप ही त्रयी (तीनों वेद) रूपा भगवती हैं; संसार के पालन के लिए आप ही वार्ता (जीविका) हैं और सब लोकों की घोर पीड़ा का नाश करने वाली हैं।

    You are the soul of sound, the treasure-house of the pure Rig and Yajur Vedas and of the Samans with their lovely udgitha chants; you are the Goddess of the three Vedas, Bhagavati; you are the livelihood of all the worlds for their sustenance, and the destroyer of their greatest suffering.

  11. Shloka 11#

    गौरी त्वमेव शशिमौलिकृतप्रतिष्ठा ॥

    medhāsi devi viditākhilaśāstrasārā
    durgāsi durgabhavasāgaranaurasaṅgā |
    śrīḥ kaiṭabhārihṛdayaikakṛtādhivāsā
    gaurī tvameva śaśimaulikṛtapratiṣṭhā ||

    हे देवि! आप ही सब शास्त्रों के सार को जानने वाली मेधा हैं; दुर्गम संसार-सागर से पार उतारने वाली नौका रूप, आसक्ति-रहित दुर्गा हैं; कैटभ के शत्रु विष्णु के हृदय में निवास करने वाली लक्ष्मी हैं; और चन्द्रशेखर शिव के साथ प्रतिष्ठित गौरी हैं।

    O Goddess, you are Medha, who knows the essence of all scriptures; you are Durga, the boat that carries us across the hard ocean of worldly existence, yourself unattached; you are Shri, who dwells in the heart of Kaitabha's slayer (Vishnu); and you are Gauri, established with the moon-crowned Shiva.

  12. Shloka 12#

    वक्त्रं विलोक्य सहसा महिषासुरेण ॥

    īṣatsahāsamamalaṃ paripūrṇacandra-
    bimbānukāri kanakottamakāntikāntam |
    atyadbhutaṃ prahṛtamāttaruṣā tathāpi
    vaktraṃ vilokya sahasā mahiṣāsureṇa ||

    आपका मुख मन्द मुस्कान से युक्त, निर्मल, पूर्ण चन्द्रमा के बिम्ब के समान और उत्तम स्वर्ण की कान्ति से सुन्दर है; उसे देखकर भी महिषासुर ने क्रोध में भरकर उस पर प्रहार किया — यह अत्यन्त आश्चर्य की बात है।

    Gently smiling, spotless, like the orb of the full moon, lovely with the radiance of the finest gold — it is most wondrous that, seeing your face, Mahishasura in his rage still struck at it.

  13. Shloka 13#

    कैर्जीव्यते हि कुपितान्तकदर्शनेन ॥

    dṛṣṭvā tu devi kupitaṃ bhrukuṭīkarālam
    udyacchaśāṅkasadṛśacchavi yanna sadyaḥ |
    prāṇānmumoca mahiṣastadatīva citraṃ
    kairjīvyate hi kupitāntakadarśanena ||

    और हे देवि! क्रोध से भरा, भौंहें तनी होने से विकराल और उदय होते चन्द्रमा के समान लाल आपका मुख देखकर भी महिषासुर ने तुरन्त प्राण नहीं त्यागे — यह और भी आश्चर्य है, क्योंकि क्रोधित यमराज को देखकर भला कौन जीवित रह सकता है?

    And it is more wondrous still, O Goddess, that seeing your face angry, terrible with frowning brows, red as the rising moon, Mahisha did not give up his life at once — for who can live after seeing Death himself enraged?

  14. Shloka 14#

    नीतं बलं सुविपुलं महिषासुरस्य ॥

    devi prasīda paramā bhavatī bhavāya
    sadyo vināśayasi kopavatī kulāni |
    vijñātametadadhunaiva yadastametan
    nītaṃ balaṃ suvipulaṃ mahiṣāsurasya ||

    हे देवि! प्रसन्न होइए। आप परम हैं; प्रसन्न होने पर कल्याण करती हैं और क्रोधित होने पर तत्काल कुलों का नाश कर देती हैं — यह हमने अभी जाना, जब महिषासुर की विशाल सेना का अन्त कर दिया गया।

    O Goddess, be gracious. You are supreme; when pleased you bring well-being, and when angry you at once destroy whole races — this we have known just now, as the vast army of Mahishasura has been brought to its end.

  15. Shloka 15#

    येषां सदाभ्युदयदा भवती प्रसन्ना ॥

    te saṃmatā janapadeṣu dhanāni teṣāṃ
    teṣāṃ yaśāṃsi na ca sīdati dharmavargaḥ |
    dhanyāsta eva nibhṛtātmajabhṛtyadārā
    yeṣāṃ sadābhyudayadā bhavatī prasannā ||

    जिन पर अभ्युदय देने वाली आप सदा प्रसन्न रहती हैं, वे देश में सम्मानित होते हैं, उन्हें धन और यश मिलता है, उनका धर्म कभी शिथिल नहीं होता; वे ही धन्य हैं और उनके पुत्र, सेवक तथा पत्नी विनम्र होते हैं।

    Those on whom you, the giver of prosperity, are always pleased are honoured among the people; theirs is wealth, theirs is fame, their dharma never fails; blessed are they, with devoted children, servants and wives.

  16. Shloka 16#

    dharmyāṇi devi sakalāni sadaiva karmāṇy
    atyādṛtaḥ pratidinaṃ sukṛtī karoti |
    svargaṃ prayāti ca tato bhavatīprasādāl
    lokatraye'pi phaladā nanu devi tena ||

    By your grace, O Goddess, the fortunate man performs every righteous act each day with great reverence and then goes to heaven; so you indeed give fruit in all three worlds.

  17. Shloka 17#

    सर्वोपकारकरणाय सदाऽऽर्द्रचित्ता ॥

    durge smṛtā harasi bhītimaśeṣajantoḥ
    svasthaiḥ smṛtā matimatīva śubhāṃ dadāsi |
    dāridryaduḥkhabhayahāriṇi kā tvadanyā
    sarvopakārakaraṇāya sadā''rdracittā ||

    हे दुर्गे! स्मरण करने पर आप सब प्राणियों का भय हर लेती हैं, और स्वस्थ पुरुषों द्वारा स्मरण करने पर उन्हें अत्यन्त शुभ बुद्धि देती हैं। दरिद्रता, दुःख और भय हरने वाली देवि! आपके सिवा दूसरी कौन है, जिसका चित्त सबका उपकार करने के लिए सदा दया से भरा रहता हो?

    O Durga, when remembered you take away the fear of every creature; when remembered by the untroubled, you give them a mind most auspicious. O remover of poverty, sorrow and fear, who but you has a heart ever tender to help all?

  18. Shloka 18#

    मत्वेति नूनमहितान् विनिहंसि देवि ॥

    ebhirhatairjagadupaiti sukhaṃ tathaite
    kurvantu nāma narakāya cirāya pāpam |
    saṃgrāmamṛtyumadhigamya divaṃ prayāntu
    matveti nūnamahitān vinihaṃsi devi ||

    'इनके मारे जाने से संसार को सुख मिले, और यद्यपि इन्होंने इतने पाप किए हैं कि दीर्घकाल तक नरक में रहें, फिर भी युद्ध में मृत्यु पाकर ये स्वर्ग जाएँ' — निश्चय ही ऐसा सोचकर, हे देवि, आप शत्रुओं का वध करती हैं।

    'With these slain, the world gains happiness; and though these have sinned enough to stay long in hell, let them reach heaven by meeting death in battle' — surely thinking thus, O Goddess, you slay the hostile.

  19. Shloka 19#

    इत्थं मतिर्भवति तेष्वपि तेऽतिसाध्वी ॥

    dṛṣṭvaiva kiṃ na bhavatī prakaroti bhasma
    sarvāsurānariṣu yatprahiṇoṣi śastram |
    lokān prayāntu ripavo'pi hi śastrapūtā
    itthaṃ matirbhavati teṣvapi te'tisādhvī ||

    क्या आप केवल देखकर ही सब असुरों को भस्म नहीं कर सकतीं? फिर भी शत्रुओं पर शस्त्र चलाती हैं, यह सोचकर कि 'मेरे शस्त्रों से पवित्र होकर शत्रु भी उत्तम लोकों को जाएँ' — उनके प्रति भी आपका विचार ऐसा अत्यन्त उत्तम है।

    Could you not reduce all the asuras to ashes merely by looking at them? Yet you hurl weapons at the foe, thinking, 'Purified by my weapons, may even my enemies reach the higher worlds' — so gracious is your mind even towards them.

  20. Shloka 20#

    योग्याननं तव विलोकयतां तदेतत् ॥

    khaḍgaprabhānikaravisphuraṇaistathograiḥ
    śūlāgrakāntinivahena dṛśo'surāṇām |
    yannāgatā vilayamaṃśumadindukhaṇḍa-
    yogyānanaṃ tava vilokayatāṃ tadetat ||

    आपके खड्ग की चमक के भीषण प्रकाश और त्रिशूल की नोक की कान्ति से असुरों की आँखें नष्ट नहीं हुईं, क्योंकि वे किरणों वाले चन्द्रमा के अंश के समान आपके मुख को देख रहे थे।

    That the eyes of the asuras were not destroyed by the terrible flashing of your sword and the brilliance of your trident's point is because they gazed on your face, which shines like a portion of the radiant moon.

  21. Shloka 21#

    वैरिष्वपि प्रकटितैव दया त्वयेत्थम् ॥

    durvṛttavṛttaśamanaṃ tava devi śīlaṃ
    rūpaṃ tathaitadavicintyamatulyamanyaiḥ |
    vīryaṃ ca hantṛ hṛtadevaparākramāṇāṃ
    vairiṣvapi prakaṭitaiva dayā tvayettham ||

    हे देवि! दुराचारियों के दुराचार को शान्त करना आपका स्वभाव है; आपका यह रूप अचिन्त्य है और दूसरों से इसकी तुलना नहीं; देवताओं का पराक्रम छीनने वालों को मारने वाला आपका पराक्रम है — इस प्रकार आपने शत्रुओं पर भी दया प्रकट की है।

    O Goddess, your nature is to quell the conduct of the wicked; your form is beyond thought and unequalled by others; your valour slays those who robbed the gods of their might — and so you have shown compassion even to your enemies.

  22. Shloka 22#

    त्वय्येव देवि वरदे भुवनत्रयेऽपि ॥

    kenopamā bhavatu te'sya parākramasya
    rūpaṃ ca śatrubhayakāryatihāri kutra |
    citte kṛpā samaraniṣṭhuratā ca dṛṣṭā
    tvayyeva devi varade bhuvanatraye'pi ||

    आपके इस पराक्रम की किससे तुलना हो? शत्रुओं को भय देने वाला ऐसा अत्यन्त मनोहर रूप और कहाँ है? हृदय में कृपा और युद्ध में कठोरता — हे वरदायिनी देवि, तीनों लोकों में ये दोनों केवल आपमें ही देखी गई हैं।

    With what can this valour of yours be compared? Where else is a form so lovely yet so terrifying to enemies? Compassion in the heart and ruthlessness in battle — O giver of boons, these are seen together in you alone, in all three worlds.

  23. Shloka 23#

    अस्माकमुन्मदसुरारिभवं नमस्ते ॥

    trailokyametadakhilaṃ ripunāśanena
    trātaṃ tvayā samaramūrdhani te'pi hatvā |
    nītā divaṃ ripugaṇā bhayamapyapāstam
    asmākamunmadasurāribhavaṃ namaste ||

    शत्रुओं का नाश करके आपने इन तीनों लोकों की रक्षा की है; युद्धभूमि में उन्हें मारकर शत्रुओं को भी स्वर्ग पहुँचाया है और उन्मत्त देवशत्रुओं से उत्पन्न हमारा भय भी दूर कर दिया है। आपको नमस्कार है।

    By destroying the enemy you have saved all these three worlds; slaying them at the head of battle, you have led even the hosts of foes to heaven, and you have driven away our fear of the frenzied enemies of the gods. Salutations to you.

  24. Shloka 24#

    śūlena pāhi no devi pāhi khaḍgena cāmbike |
    ghaṇṭāsvanena naḥ pāhi cāpajyāniḥsvanena ca ||

    Protect us with your trident, O Goddess; protect us with your sword, O Ambika; protect us with the sound of your bell and the twang of your bowstring.

  25. Shloka 25#

    प्राच्यां रक्ष प्रतीच्यां च चण्डिके रक्ष दक्षिणे ।
    भ्रामणेनात्मशूलस्य उत्तरस्यां तथेश्वरि ॥

    prācyāṃ rakṣa pratīcyāṃ ca caṇḍike rakṣa dakṣiṇe |
    bhrāmaṇenātmaśūlasya uttarasyāṃ tatheśvari ||

    हे चण्डिके! पूर्व, पश्चिम और दक्षिण में हमारी रक्षा करो; और हे ईश्वरि, अपने त्रिशूल को घुमाकर उत्तर दिशा में भी रक्षा करो।

    O Chandika, protect us in the east and in the west; protect us in the south; and in the north, O sovereign Goddess, by the whirling of your trident.

  26. Shloka 26#

    saumyāni yāni rūpāṇi trailokye vicaranti te |
    yāni cātyarthaghorāṇi tai rakṣāsmāṃstathā bhuvam ||

    With those of your forms that are gentle and wander the three worlds, and with those that are exceedingly terrible, protect us and the earth.

  27. Shloka 27#

  1. Prepare. Bathe, sit facing the Goddess on a clean (often red) cloth, and light a ghee lamp. Keep the book on a stand, not on the floor or your lap.
  2. Continue from the previous chapter. If you are reading the whole text, take up where you stopped; many read one or more chapters each day of Navratri.
  3. Recite clearly. Read without hurrying and without stopping in the middle of a chapter. If you cannot read Sanskrit fluently, read the Hindi or English meaning alongside.
  4. Close. At the end of your day's reading, offer flowers and do the aarti.

A common Navratri plan: day 1 — chapter 1; day 2 — chapters 2–3; day 3 — chapter 4; day 4 — chapters 5–8; day 5 — chapters 9–10; day 6 — chapter 11; day 7 — chapters 12–13 (traditions differ). Others read all thirteen chapters in one sitting.
