What Bajrang Baan means

Bajrang Baan means "the arrow of Bajrang" — Bajrang (from Vajrāṅga, "with a body like a thunderbolt") being a popular name of Hanuman. Where the Hanuman Chalisa praises Hanuman, the Bajrang Baan summons him: the devotee recalls his deeds in Lanka, then calls on him, again and again and with mounting urgency, to rush like an arrow and strike down every trouble, enemy and fear.

Its tone is that of a child who has every right to call a parent — "Why the delay now, my master?", "This time your devotee's honour is at stake". It even invokes Hanuman by his oath to Rama, which is why many families treat it with special seriousness. It closes with the promise that whoever recites it with faith is protected by Hanuman.

How to chant Bajrang Baan

  • WhenTuesdays and Saturdays, or in times of serious trouble
  • Often read withHanuman Chalisa and Sankat Mochan Hanumanashtak
  • TimeAbout eight to ten minutes
  1. Prepare. Bathe, sit before an image of Hanuman, light a lamp and, if you wish, offer guggul incense as the text itself mentions.
  2. Remember Shri Rama first. Hanuman is Rama's servant; many begin with "Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram" or the Hanuman Chalisa.
  3. Recite with a clear intention. Read it through steadily and with feeling, from the opening doha to the closing doha.

Many families and teachers advise reciting the Bajrang Baan with seriousness and a pure intention — for protection and the removal of real trouble, never to harm anyone. Follow your own tradition or your guru's guidance.

Where Bajrang Baan comes from

The Bajrang Baan is written in Awadhi in the chaupai-doha form of the Ramcharitmanas, and is popularly attributed to Goswami Tulsidas. It is not, however, among the works scholars accept as his, and its author and date are uncertain. It is printed in many popular Hanuman prayer books alongside the Hanuman Chalisa and Sankat Mochan Hanumanashtak.

The text mixes devotional verse with bīja ("seed") syllables such as hrīṃ, huṃ, caṃ, haṃ and saṃ, as found in tantric mantras — one reason it is felt to be a powerful prayer of protection. Printed versions differ in many small words; this page follows the standard popular text.
