    महिषेऽसुराणामधिपे देवानां च पुरन्दरे ॥

    ṛṣiruvāca
    devāsuramabhūd yuddhaṃ pūrṇamabdaśataṃ purā |
    mahiṣe'surāṇāmadhipe devānāṃ ca purandare ||

    ऋषि बोले: पूर्वकाल में देवताओं और असुरों में पूरे सौ वर्ष तक युद्ध हुआ था, जब असुरों के स्वामी महिष और देवताओं के स्वामी इन्द्र थे।

    The sage said: Long ago there was a war between the gods and the asuras that lasted a full hundred years, when Mahisha was lord of the asuras and Indra (Purandara) lord of the gods.

    तत्रासुरैर्महावीर्यैर्देवसैन्यं पराजितम् ।
    जित्वा च सकलान् देवानिन्द्रोऽभून्महिषासुरः ॥

    tatrāsurairmahāvīryairdevasainyaṃ parājitam |
    jitvā ca sakalān devānindro'bhūnmahiṣāsuraḥ ||

    उस युद्ध में महाबली असुरों ने देवसेना को परास्त कर दिया; सब देवताओं को जीतकर महिषासुर इन्द्र बन बैठा।

    In that war the army of the gods was defeated by the mighty asuras; having conquered all the gods, Mahishasura became Indra.

    puraskṛtya gatāstatra yatreśa-garuḍadhvajau ||

    तब पराजित देवता कमलयोनि प्रजापति ब्रह्मा जी को आगे करके वहाँ गए जहाँ शंकर और गरुडध्वज विष्णु विराजमान थे।

    Then the defeated gods, led by Brahma, the lotus-born lord of creatures, went to where Shiva and Vishnu (who bears Garuda on his banner) were.

    देवताओं ने उन दोनों को महिषासुर की करतूतें और अपनी पराजय का पूरा वृत्तान्त जैसा घटा था वैसा कह सुनाया।

    The gods told the two of them everything just as it had happened — the deeds of Mahishasura and the full story of their own defeat.

    vicaranti yathā martyā mahiṣeṇa durātmanā ||

    उस दुरात्मा महिष ने सब देवताओं को स्वर्ग से निकाल दिया है; वे मनुष्यों की भाँति पृथ्वी पर भटक रहे हैं।

    Driven out of heaven by that wicked Mahisha, all the hosts of the gods now wander the earth like mortals.

What Durga Saptashati Chapter 2 means

The demon Mahishasura has defeated the gods and taken Indra's throne. The gods go to Vishnu and Shiva; from their anger and from the radiance of every god a great light gathers and takes the form of the Goddess. Each god gives her a weapon — Shiva his trident, Vishnu his discus, Indra the thunderbolt, Himavan a lion to ride.

With a roar that shakes the worlds she goes to battle and destroys the generals and armies of Mahishasura.

  3. Recite clearly. Read without hurrying and without stopping in the middle of a chapter. If you cannot read Sanskrit fluently, read the Hindi or English meaning alongside.
  4. Close. At the end of your day's reading, offer flowers and do the aarti.

A common Navratri plan: day 1 — chapter 1; day 2 — chapters 2–3; day 3 — chapter 4; day 4 — chapters 5–8; day 5 — chapters 9–10; day 6 — chapter 11; day 7 — chapters 12–13 (traditions differ). Others read all thirteen chapters in one sitting.
