What Nirvana Shatakam means
Each verse of the Nirvana Shatakam names things we usually take ourselves to be — the body, the senses, the emotions, even our religious duties and goals — and sets them aside with "na", "not this". What remains when everything changeable is set aside is the self, which the refrain names: chidananda-rupa, consciousness and bliss, identical with Shiva.
It is a teaching hymn more than a prayer of request. Reciting it slowly is a way of practising the Advaita method of neti neti ("not this, not this").
How to chant Nirvana Shatakam
- WhenDaily meditation, Mahashivratri, Mondays, or before quiet sitting
- TimeAbout 3 minutes
- StyleOften sung slowly; the refrain is repeated by everyone
- Sit still. Sit upright and take a few slow breaths before you begin.
- Recite with attention. At each "na" let go of what is named; rest on the refrain "Shivoham".
