Where Sankat Mochan Hanumanashtak comes from
The Ashtak is in the savaiya-style metre called mattagayand: eight four-line verses, each recalling a time Hanuman ended a crisis, and each closing with the same line — "ko nahiṃ jānata hai jaga meṃ kapi saṅkaṭamocana nāma tihāro". It is traditionally attributed to Goswami Tulsidas and is printed with the Hanuman Chalisa in popular prayer books.
Some of the episodes it recalls — such as Hanuman rescuing Rama and Lakshmana from Ahiravana in the netherworld — come from later Ramayana traditions rather than Valmiki or the Ramcharitmanas.
