What Durga Saptashati Chapter 3 means
The battle reaches its climax. The Goddess slays Mahishasura's generals Chikshura, Chamara and others. Mahishasura himself attacks, changing from buffalo to lion to man to elephant and back to buffalo. The Goddess drinks divine wine, laughs, and with her foot pins him down; as he half emerges from the buffalo's mouth, she cuts off his head.
How to chant Durga Saptashati Chapter 3
- PartMadhyama charitra (middle episode, chapters 2–4)
- Presiding formMahalakshmi
- WhenNavratri (Chaitra and Sharad), Ashtami, Fridays
- Prepare. Bathe, sit facing the Goddess on a clean (often red) cloth, and light a ghee lamp. Keep the book on a stand, not on the floor or your lap.
- Continue from the previous chapter. If you are reading the whole text, take up where you stopped; many read one or more chapters each day of Navratri.
- Recite clearly. Read without hurrying and without stopping in the middle of a chapter. If you cannot read Sanskrit fluently, read the Hindi or English meaning alongside.
- Close. At the end of your day's reading, offer flowers and do the aarti.
A common Navratri plan: day 1 — chapter 1; day 2 — chapters 2–3; day 3 — chapter 4; day 4 — chapters 5–8; day 5 — chapters 9–10; day 6 — chapter 11; day 7 — chapters 12–13 (traditions differ). Others read all thirteen chapters in one sitting.
