What Shiva Manasa Puja means
Manasa puja means worship done in the mind. The first three verses offer, one by one, every part of a formal puja — seat, bath, clothes, sandal, flowers, incense, lamp, food, betel, umbrella, whisk, music and prostration — all imagined with devotion. The fourth verse turns everything inward: the body is the temple, every action is worship, sleep is samadhi.
It teaches that sincere devotion matters more than material offerings, and that ordinary daily life can itself be an offering to Shiva.
How to chant Shiva Manasa Puja
- WhenAnytime, especially when a full puja is not possible — while travelling, unwell, or at the end of the day
- TimeAbout 3 minutes
- Often withShiva Panchakshara, Om Namah Shivaya japa
- Close your eyes. Picture Shiva before you, in a temple or seated on Kailasa.
- Offer each item in your mind. As each verse names an offering, imagine placing it before him.
- End with the fourth verse. Offer your whole day and your actions; close with the kshama verse asking forgiveness.
No materials are needed; this is a complete puja on its own.
Where Shiva Manasa Puja comes from
The hymn is traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. The closing "kara-charana-kritam" verse is widely recited at the end of Shiva worship and appears in several collections attached to this stotra.
