  1. Verse 15.1 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    śrībhagavānuvāca |
    ūrdhvamūlamadhaḥśākhamaśvatthaṃ prāhuravyayam |
    chandāṃsi yasya parṇāni yastaṃ veda sa vedavit ||

    The Blessed Lord said: They speak of an imperishable ashvattha (sacred fig) tree with its roots above and branches below. Its leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree knows the Vedas.

  2. Verse 15.2 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    कर्मानुबन्धीनि मनुष्यलोके ॥

    adhaścordhvaṃ prasṛtāstasya śākhā
    guṇapravṛddhā viṣayapravālāḥ |
    adhaśca mūlānyanusantatāni
    karmānubandhīni manuṣyaloke ||

    उसकी शाखाएँ नीचे और ऊपर फैली हैं, जो गुणों से पोषित हैं और जिनकी कोंपलें इंद्रियों के विषय हैं। नीचे मनुष्य लोक में उसकी जड़ें फैली हुई हैं, जो मनुष्य को कर्मों से बाँधती हैं।

    Its branches spread downward and upward, nourished by the gunas, with sense objects as their buds. Below, in the human world, its roots stretch out, binding people to action.

  3. Verse 15.3 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    असङ्गशस्त्रेण दृढेन छित्त्वा ॥

    na rūpamasyeha tathopalabhyate
    nānto na cādirna ca sampratiṣṭhā |
    aśvatthamenaṃ suvirūḍhamūlaṃ
    asaṅgaśastreṇa dṛḍhena chittvā ||

    इस संसार में इस वृक्ष का वास्तविक रूप दिखाई नहीं देता — न इसका अंत, न आदि, न आधार। इस गहरी जड़ों वाले अश्वत्थ को वैराग्य रूपी दृढ़ शस्त्र से काटकर —

    Its true form is not perceived here, nor its end, its beginning or its foundation. Having cut down this firmly rooted ashvattha with the strong axe of detachment —

  4. Verse 15.4 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    यतः प्रवृत्तिः प्रसृता पुराणी ॥

    tataḥ padaṃ tatparimārgitavyaṃ
    yasmingatā na nivartanti bhūyaḥ |
    tameva cādyaṃ puruṣaṃ prapadye
    yataḥ pravṛttiḥ prasṛtā purāṇī ||

    फिर उस पद की खोज करनी चाहिए जहाँ पहुँचकर मनुष्य लौटकर नहीं आता, यह सोचते हुए कि 'मैं उस आदि पुरुष की शरण लेता हूँ जिससे यह प्राचीन सृष्टि-प्रवाह निकला है।'

    one should then seek that goal from which those who reach it never return, thinking: 'I take refuge in that primal Person from whom this ancient flow of creation has come forth.'

  5. Verse 15.5 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    गच्छन्त्यमूढाः पदमव्ययं तत् ॥

    nirmānamohā jitasaṅgadoṣā
    adhyātmanityā vinivṛttakāmāḥ |
    dvandvairvimuktāḥ sukhaduḥkhasaṃjñair-
    gacchantyamūḍhāḥ padamavyayaṃ tat ||

    जो अभिमान और मोह से रहित हैं, जिन्होंने आसक्ति के दोष को जीत लिया है, जो सदा आत्मचिंतन में लगे हैं, जिनकी कामनाएँ शांत हो गई हैं और जो सुख-दुःख के द्वंद्वों से मुक्त हैं, वे ज्ञानी उस अविनाशी पद को पाते हैं।

    Free from pride and delusion, having overcome the fault of attachment, ever dwelling in the Self, with desires turned away, and released from the pairs of opposites called pleasure and pain, the undeluded reach that eternal goal.

  6. Verse 15.6 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    na tadbhāsayate sūryo na śaśāṅko na pāvakaḥ |
    yadgatvā na nivartante taddhāma paramaṃ mama ||

    Neither the sun, nor the moon, nor fire illumines that place. Having gone there, people do not return — that is My supreme abode.

  7. Verse 15.7 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    ममैवांशो जीवलोके जीवभूतः सनातनः ।
    मनःषष्ठानीन्द्रियाणि प्रकृतिस्थानि कर्षति ॥

    mamaivāṃśo jīvaloke jīvabhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ |
    manaḥṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi prakṛtisthāni karṣati ||

    मेरा ही एक सनातन अंश इस जीव-लोक में जीवात्मा बनकर, प्रकृति में स्थित मन और पाँचों इंद्रियों को अपनी ओर खींचता है।

    An eternal fragment of Myself, becoming the living soul in the world of beings, draws to itself the mind and the five senses, which rest in Prakriti.

  8. Verse 15.8 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    शरीरं यदवाप्नोति यच्चाप्युत्क्रामतीश्वरः ।
    गृहीत्वैतानि संयाति वायुर्गन्धानिवाशयात् ॥

    śarīraṃ yadavāpnoti yaccāpyutkrāmatīśvaraḥ |
    gṛhītvaitāni saṃyāti vāyurgandhānivāśayāt ||

    जब जीवात्मा (शरीर का स्वामी) कोई शरीर धारण करता है या उसे छोड़ता है, तब वह इन (मन और इंद्रियों) को साथ लेकर जाता है, जैसे वायु फूलों से गंध ले जाती है।

    When the soul, as lord of the body, takes on a body and when it leaves one, it carries these along with it, just as the wind carries scents from their source.

  9. Verse 15.9 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    श्रोत्रं चक्षुः स्पर्शनं च रसनं घ्राणमेव च ।
    अधिष्ठाय मनश्चायं विषयानुपसेवते ॥

    śrotraṃ cakṣuḥ sparśanaṃ ca rasanaṃ ghrāṇameva ca |
    adhiṣṭhāya manaścāyaṃ viṣayānupasevate ||

    कान, आँख, त्वचा, जीभ और नाक — इन इंद्रियों तथा मन का आश्रय लेकर यह जीवात्मा विषयों का अनुभव और भोग करता है।

    Presiding over the ear, the eye, touch, taste and smell, and also the mind, the soul enjoys the objects of the senses.

  10. Verse 15.10 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    उत्क्रामन्तं स्थितं वापि भुञ्जानं वा गुणान्वितम् ।
    विमूढा नानुपश्यन्ति पश्यन्ति ज्ञानचक्षुषः ॥

    utkrāmantaṃ sthitaṃ vāpi bhuñjānaṃ vā guṇānvitam |
    vimūḍhā nānupaśyanti paśyanti jñānacakṣuṣaḥ ||

    शरीर छोड़ते हुए, शरीर में रहते हुए, या गुणों से युक्त होकर भोग करते हुए जीवात्मा को मूढ़ लोग नहीं देख पाते; ज्ञान की दृष्टि वाले ही उसे देखते हैं।

    The deluded do not see the soul as it departs, stays, or enjoys while joined with the gunas; but those with the eye of wisdom see it.

  11. Verse 15.11 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    यतन्तो योगिनश्चैनं पश्यन्त्यात्मन्यवस्थितम् ।
    यतन्तोऽप्यकृतात्मानो नैनं पश्यन्त्यचेतसः ॥

    yatanto yoginaścainaṃ paśyantyātmanyavasthitam |
    yatanto'pyakṛtātmāno nainaṃ paśyantyacetasaḥ ||

    प्रयत्न करने वाले योगी इस आत्मा को अपने भीतर स्थित देखते हैं; परंतु जिनका अंतःकरण शुद्ध नहीं है और जिनमें विवेक नहीं है, वे प्रयत्न करके भी इसे नहीं देख पाते।

    Striving yogis see this Self established within themselves; but those who are impure and lack understanding do not see it, even though they strive.

  12. Verse 15.12 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    yadādityagataṃ tejo jagadbhāsayate'khilam |
    yaccandramasi yaccāgnau tattejo viddhi māmakam ||

    The radiance in the sun that lights up the whole world, and the radiance in the moon and in fire — know that radiance to be Mine.

  13. Verse 15.13 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    gāmāviśya ca bhūtāni dhārayāmyahamojasā |
    puṣṇāmi cauṣadhīḥ sarvāḥ somo bhūtvā rasātmakaḥ ||

    Entering the earth, I support all beings with My energy; and becoming Soma, the essence of sap, I nourish all plants.

  14. Verse 15.14 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    अहं वैश्वानरो भूत्वा प्राणिनां देहमाश्रितः ।
    प्राणापानसमायुक्तः पचाम्यन्नं चतुर्विधम् ॥

    ahaṃ vaiśvānaro bhūtvā prāṇināṃ dehamāśritaḥ |
    prāṇāpānasamāyuktaḥ pacāmyannaṃ caturvidham ||

    मैं वैश्वानर (जठराग्नि) बनकर प्राणियों के शरीर में रहता हूँ, और प्राण तथा अपान वायु से मिलकर चारों प्रकार के अन्न को पचाता हूँ।

    Becoming Vaishvanara, the fire of digestion, I dwell in the bodies of living beings and, joined with the incoming and outgoing breath, digest the four kinds of food.

  15. Verse 15.15 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    वेदान्तकृद्वेदविदेव चाहम् ॥

    sarvasya cāhaṃ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo
    mattaḥ smṛtirjñānamapohanañca |
    vedaiśca sarvairahameva vedyo
    vedāntakṛdvedavideva cāham ||

    मैं सबके हृदय में स्थित हूँ। स्मृति, ज्ञान और उनका लोप मुझसे ही होता है। सब वेदों के द्वारा जानने योग्य मैं ही हूँ; वेदांत का रचयिता और वेदों का ज्ञाता भी मैं ही हूँ।

    I am seated in the hearts of all. From Me come memory, knowledge and their loss. I alone am to be known through all the Vedas; I am the author of Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas.

  16. Verse 15.16 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    dvāvimau puruṣau loke kṣaraścākṣara eva ca |
    kṣaraḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni kūṭastho'kṣara ucyate ||

    There are two kinds of Purusha in this world: the perishable and the imperishable. All beings are the perishable; the unchanging one is called the imperishable.

  17. Verse 15.17 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    उत्तमः पुरुषस्त्वन्यः परमात्मेत्युदाहृतः ।
    यो लोकत्रयमाविश्य बिभर्त्यव्यय ईश्वरः ॥

    uttamaḥ puruṣastvanyaḥ paramātmetyudāhṛtaḥ |
    yo lokatrayamāviśya bibhartyavyaya īśvaraḥ ||

    परंतु उत्तम पुरुष इन दोनों से भिन्न है, जिसे परमात्मा कहा जाता है। वह अविनाशी ईश्वर तीनों लोकों में प्रवेश करके उनका पालन करता है।

    But there is another, the highest Person, called the Supreme Self, the imperishable Lord who pervades and sustains the three worlds.

  18. Verse 15.18 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    yasmātkṣaramatīto'hamakṣarādapi cottamaḥ |
    ato'smi loke vede ca prathitaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ||

    Because I am beyond the perishable and higher even than the imperishable, I am celebrated in the world and in the Vedas as Purushottama, the Supreme Person.

  19. Verse 15.19 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    yo māmevamasammūḍho jānāti puruṣottamam |
    sa sarvavidbhajati māṃ sarvabhāvena bhārata ||

    One who, free from delusion, knows Me thus as the Supreme Person, knows all, and worships Me with his whole being, O Bharata (Arjuna).

  20. Verse 15.20 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    इति गुह्यतमं शास्त्रमिदमुक्तं मयानघ ।
    एतद्बुद्ध्वा बुद्धिमान्स्यात्कृतकृत्यश्च भारत ॥

    iti guhyatamaṃ śāstramidamuktaṃ mayānagha |
    etadbuddhvā buddhimānsyātkṛtakṛtyaśca bhārata ||

    हे निष्पाप अर्जुन, इस प्रकार मैंने तुम्हें यह सबसे गोपनीय शास्त्र बताया। हे भारत, इसे समझकर मनुष्य बुद्धिमान और कृतकृत्य (जिसके सब कर्तव्य पूरे हो गए) हो जाता है।

    Thus I have taught you this most secret teaching, O Anagha (sinless one). Understanding it, a person becomes truly wise and has fulfilled all duties, O Bharata.

About Chapter 15 — Purushottama Yoga

Krishna describes the world as an eternal ashvattha (sacred fig) tree with its roots above and branches below, whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. Its branches spread through the gunas and its roots bind people to action. This tree must be cut down with the strong axe of detachment, after which one should seek the abode from which there is no return — His supreme abode, which neither sun, moon nor fire illumines. The individual soul is an eternal fragment of Him, carrying the senses from body to body. Krishna is the light in the sun and moon, the nourisher of plants and the digestive fire in beings, seated in every heart. Beyond the perishable and the imperishable, He is the Purushottama, the Supreme Person.
