What Saraswati Mantras means
Saraswati is the goddess of learning, speech, music and the arts, so her mantras are the prayers of students, teachers, musicians and writers. "Saraswati namastubhyam" is said before study ("I am beginning my studies; may I always succeed"); "Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah" uses "aim", the seed sound of speech and learning.
The Rigveda praises her as a river and as the guardian of thought ("dhinam avitri"); the Saptashati salutes the Devi who dwells in all beings as intelligence. For the best-loved dhyana verse, see Ya Kundendu (Saraswati Vandana).
