What Annapurna Stotram means

Annapurna — "she who is full of food" — is Parvati as the giver of nourishment. In Kashi she is worshipped beside Vishwanath; in a well-known image Shiva himself stands before her with a begging bowl. Shankaracharya takes the same place: every verse ends asking her for bhiksha, alms.

The famous closing verses show what he really asks for: "give me alms for the attainment of knowledge and detachment" — and then, "my mother is Parvati, my father is Shiva, Shiva's devotees are my family, and the three worlds are my homeland."

  3. End with the two closing verses. Many recite "Annapurne sadapurne" before every meal.
