What Durga Saptashati Chapter 1 means
King Suratha, who has lost his kingdom, and the merchant Samadhi, cast out by his family, meet in the forest hermitage of the sage Medhas. Both still feel attachment to what they have lost and ask why. Medhas explains that it is the power of Mahamaya, the Goddess who binds the world in illusion and also frees it.
He tells the first story: at the end of an age, the demons Madhu and Kaitabha sprang from Vishnu's ears as he slept on the cosmic ocean, and threatened Brahma. Brahma praised the Goddess as Yoganidra, the sleep of Vishnu; she withdrew from Vishnu, who awoke and slew the two demons.
