  12. Shloka 12#

    ब्रह्मेशगुहविष्णूनां तथेन्द्रस्य च शक्तयः ।

    tadvadeva hi tacchaktirasurān yoddhumāyayau ||

    जिस देवता का जैसा रूप, जैसे आभूषण और वाहन थे, वैसे ही रूप में उनकी शक्ति असुरों से लड़ने आई।

    Whatever the form of each god, with his ornaments and mount, in just that way his Shakti came to fight the asuras.

  14. Shloka 14#

    āyātā brahmaṇaḥ śaktirbrahmāṇī sābhidhīyate ||

    सबसे आगे हंसों से जुते विमान पर अक्षमाला और कमण्डलु लिए ब्रह्मा जी की शक्ति आई; वे ब्रह्माणी कहलाती हैं।

    In front, on a chariot yoked with swans, carrying a rosary and water-pot, came the Shakti of Brahma — she is called Brahmani.

    हाथ में शक्ति लिए, श्रेष्ठ मयूर पर सवार कार्तिकेय-रूपिणी अम्बिका कौमारी दैत्यों से लड़ने आईं।

    Kaumari, spear in hand, riding the finest peacock, came forward to fight the daityas — Ambika in the form of Guha.

  17. Shloka 17#

    तथैव वैष्णवी शक्तिर्गरुडोपरि संस्थिता ।
    शङ्खचक्रगदाशार्ङ्गखड्गहस्ताभ्युपाययौ ॥

    śaṅkhacakragadāśārṅgakhaḍgahastābhyupāyayau ||

    इसी प्रकार विष्णु की शक्ति वैष्णवी गरुड़ पर बैठकर शंख, चक्र, गदा, शार्ङ्ग धनुष और खड्ग हाथों में लिए आईं।

    Likewise the Shakti of Vishnu, seated on Garuda, came with conch, discus, mace, bow and sword in her hands.

  18. Shloka 18#

    śaktiḥ sāpyāyayau tatra vārāhīṃ bibhratī tanum ||

    The Shakti of Hari who bears his matchless boar form also came there, wearing the body of Varahi.

  19. Shloka 19#

    नारसिंही नृसिंहस्य बिभ्रती सदृशं वपुः ।
    प्राप्ता तत्र सटाक्षेपक्षिप्तनक्षत्रसंहतिः ॥

    prāptā tatra saṭākṣepakṣiptanakṣatrasaṃhatiḥ ||

    नृसिंह के समान शरीर धारण करने वाली नारसिंही भी वहाँ आईं; उनकी अयाल के झटकने से तारामण्डल बिखर रहे थे।

    Narasimhi, bearing a body like that of Nrisimha, arrived there, scattering the hosts of stars with the toss of her mane.

  20. Shloka 20#

    vajrahastā tathaivaindrī gajarājopari sthitā |
    prāptā sahasranayanā yathā śakrastathaiva sā ||

    Likewise Aindri came, thunderbolt in hand, seated on the king of elephants, thousand-eyed — just as Indra is, so was she.

  21. Shloka 21#

    tataḥ parivṛtastābhirīśāno devaśaktibhiḥ |
    hanyantāmasurāḥ śīghraṃ mama prītyā'ha caṇḍikām ||

    Then Ishana (Shiva), surrounded by those Shaktis of the gods, said to Chandika, 'Let the asuras be slain quickly, for my pleasure.'

  22. Shloka 22#

    ततो देवीशरीरात्तु विनिष्क्रान्तातिभीषणा ।
    चण्डिकाशक्तिरत्युग्रा शिवाशतनिनादिनी ॥

    tato devīśarīrāttu viniṣkrāntātibhīṣaṇā |
    caṇḍikāśaktiratyugrā śivāśataninādinī ||

    तब देवी के शरीर से अत्यन्त भयानक और परम उग्र चण्डिका-शक्ति प्रकट हुई, जो सैकड़ों गीदड़ियों की तरह नाद करती थी।

    Then from the body of the Goddess came forth the Shakti of Chandika, most terrible and exceedingly fierce, howling like a hundred jackals.

  23. Shloka 23#

    sā cāha dhūmrajaṭilamīśānamaparājitā |
    dūta tvaṃ gaccha bhagavan pārśvaṃ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ ||

    That invincible one said to Ishana of the smoky matted hair, 'O Lord, go as a messenger to Shumbha and Nishumbha.

  24. Shloka 24#

    brūhi śumbhaṃ niśumbhaṃ ca dānavāvatigarvitau |
    ye cānye dānavāstatra yuddhāya samupasthitāḥ ||

    'अत्यन्त गर्व में भरे दानव शुम्भ और निशुम्भ से, तथा वहाँ युद्ध के लिए उपस्थित अन्य दानवों से कहिए —

    'Tell the two exceedingly arrogant danavas, Shumbha and Nishumbha, and any other danavas assembled there for battle:

  25. Shloka 25#

    trailokyamindro labhatāṃ devāḥ santu havirbhujaḥ |
    yūyaṃ prayāta pātālaṃ yadi jīvitumicchatha ||

    '"इन्द्र को त्रिलोकी मिले और देवता यज्ञ-भाग का उपभोग करें; तुम लोग यदि जीना चाहते हो तो पाताल चले जाओ।

    '"Let Indra have the three worlds, and let the gods enjoy the sacrificial offerings. You go to Patala, if you wish to live.

  26. Shloka 26#

    balāvalepādatha cedbhavanto yuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ |
    tadāgacchata tṛpyantu macchivāḥ piśitena vaḥ ||

    '"और यदि बल के घमण्ड में युद्ध की इच्छा रखते हो, तो आओ; मेरी शिवाएँ (योगिनियाँ) तुम्हारे मांस से तृप्त हों।"'

    '"But if, from pride in your strength, you long for battle, then come — let my jackals be sated with your flesh."'

  27. Shloka 27#

    यतो नियुक्तो दौत्येन तया देव्या शिवः स्वयम् ।
    शिवदूतीति लोकेऽस्मिंस्ततः सा ख्यातिमागता ॥

    yato niyukto dautyena tayā devyā śivaḥ svayam |
    śivadūtīti loke'smiṃstataḥ sā khyātimāgatā ||

    उन देवी ने स्वयं भगवान शिव को दूत के कार्य में नियुक्त किया था, इसलिए वे इस संसार में शिवदूती नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुईं।

    Because Shiva himself was appointed messenger by that Goddess, she became famous in this world as Shivaduti.

  28. Shloka 28#

    तेऽपि श्रुत्वा वचो देव्याः शर्वाख्यातं महासुराः ।
    अमर्षापूरिता जग्मुर्यत्र कात्यायनी स्थिता ॥

    te'pi śrutvā vaco devyāḥ śarvākhyātaṃ mahāsurāḥ |
    amarṣāpūritā jagmuryatra kātyāyanī sthitā ||

    भगवान शिव के मुख से देवी के वचन सुनकर वे महादैत्य क्रोध से भर गए और जहाँ कात्यायनी विराजमान थीं, वहाँ गए।

    Those great asuras too, hearing the Goddess's words as told by Sharva (Shiva), went, filled with indignation, to where Katyayani stood.

  29. Shloka 29#

    ततः प्रथममेवाग्रे शरशक्त्यृष्टिवृष्टिभिः ।
    ववर्षुरुद्धतामर्षास्तां देवीममरारयः ॥

    tataḥ prathamamevāgre śaraśaktyṛṣṭivṛṣṭibhiḥ |
    vavarṣuruddhatāmarṣāstāṃ devīmamarārayaḥ ||

    तब सबसे पहले उद्दण्ड क्रोध में भरे देवशत्रुओं ने देवी पर बाणों, शक्तियों और ऋष्टियों की वर्षा की।

    Then, at the very start, the enemies of the gods, in towering anger, rained down arrows, spears and lances upon the Goddess.

  30. Shloka 30#

    सा च तान् प्रहितान् बाणाञ्छूलशक्तिपरश्वधान् ।
    चिच्छेद लीलयाऽध्मातधनुर्मुक्तैर्महेषुभिः ॥

    sā ca tān prahitān bāṇāñchūlaśaktiparaśvadhān |
    ciccheda līlayā'dhmātadhanurmuktairmaheṣubhiḥ ||

    और देवी ने खेल-खेल में ही अपने ताने हुए धनुष से छोड़े गए बड़े-बड़े बाणों से उनके चलाए हुए बाण, शूल, शक्ति और फरसों को काट डाला।

    And she, playfully, cut down the arrows, tridents, spears and axes they hurled, with great shafts loosed from her fully drawn bow.

  31. Shloka 31#

    तस्याग्रतस्तथा काली शूलपातविदारितान् ।
    खट्वाङ्गपोथितांश्चारीन् कुर्वती व्यचरत्तदा ॥

    tasyāgratastathā kālī śūlapātavidāritān |
    khaṭvāṅgapothitāṃścārīn kurvatī vyacarattadā ||

    उनके आगे काली शूल के प्रहार से शत्रुओं को चीरती और खट्वांग से कुचलती हुई विचरने लगीं।

    In front of her, Kali roamed about, tearing the enemies apart with blows of her spear and crushing them with her skull-staff.

  32. Shloka 32#

    kamaṇḍalujalākṣepahatavīryān hataujasaḥ |
    brahmāṇī cākarocchatrūn yena yena sma dhāvati ||

    Wherever Brahmani ran, she left the enemies robbed of valour and vigour by sprinkling the water of her water-pot.

  33. Shloka 33#

    माहेश्वरी त्रिशूलेन तथा चक्रेण वैष्णवी ।
    दैत्याञ्जघान कौमारी तथा शक्त्यातिकोपना ॥

    māheśvarī triśūlena tathā cakreṇa vaiṣṇavī |
    daityāñjaghāna kaumārī tathā śaktyātikopanā ||

    माहेश्वरी ने त्रिशूल से, वैष्णवी ने चक्र से और अत्यन्त क्रोधी कौमारी ने शक्ति से दैत्यों का वध किया।

    Maheshvari slew the daityas with her trident, Vaishnavi with her discus, and Kaumari, in great fury, with her spear.

  34. Shloka 34#

    ऐन्द्रीकुलिशपातेन शतशो दैत्यदानवाः ।
    पेतुर्विदारिताः पृथ्व्यां रुधिरौघप्रवर्षिणः ॥

    aindrīkuliśapātena śataśo daityadānavāḥ |
    peturvidāritāḥ pṛthvyāṃ rudhiraughapravarṣiṇaḥ ||

    ऐन्द्री के वज्र-प्रहार से चीरे गए सैकड़ों दैत्य-दानव रक्त की धाराएँ बहाते हुए धरती पर गिर पड़े।

    Torn by the blows of Aindri's thunderbolt, daityas and danavas fell to the earth in hundreds, pouring streams of blood.

  35. Shloka 35#

    तुण्डप्रहारविध्वस्ता दंष्ट्राग्रक्षतवक्षसः ।
    वाराहमूर्त्या न्यपतंश्चक्रेण च विदारिताः ॥

    tuṇḍaprahāravidhvastā daṃṣṭrāgrakṣatavakṣasaḥ |
    vārāhamūrtyā nyapataṃścakreṇa ca vidāritāḥ ||

    वाराही के थूथन की मार से ध्वस्त, दाढ़ों की नोक से घायल छाती वाले और चक्र से विदीर्ण होकर असुर गिर पड़े।

    Shattered by blows of her snout, their chests torn by the tips of her tusks, and ripped apart by her discus, they fell before the boar-form (Varahi).

  36. Shloka 36#

    नखैर्विदारितांश्चान्यान् भक्षयन्ती महासुरान् ।
    नारसिंही चचाराजौ नादापूर्णदिगन्तरा ॥

    nakhairvidāritāṃścānyān bhakṣayantī mahāsurān |
    nārasiṃhī cacārājau nādāpūrṇadigantarā ||

    नारसिंही अपने नखों से चीरे गए दूसरे महादैत्यों को खाती हुई और अपनी गर्जना से दिशाओं को गुँजाती हुई युद्धभूमि में विचरने लगीं।

    Narasimhi roamed the battlefield devouring other great asuras torn apart by her claws, filling the space between the quarters with her roar.

  37. Shloka 37#

    caṇḍāṭṭahāsairasurāḥ śivadūtyabhidūṣitāḥ |
    petuḥ pṛthivyāṃ patitāṃstāṃścakhādātha sā tadā ||

    Struck down by Shivaduti's fierce loud laughter, the asuras fell to the earth, and she then devoured those who had fallen.

  38. Shloka 38#

    इति मातृगणं क्रुद्धं मर्दयन्तं महासुरान् ।
    दृष्ट्वाभ्युपायैर्विविधैर्नेशुर्देवारिसैनिकाः ॥

    dṛṣṭvābhyupāyairvividhairneśurdevārisainikāḥ ||

    क्रोध से भरे मातृगण को इस प्रकार अनेक उपायों से महादैत्यों का मर्दन करते देख देवशत्रुओं के सैनिक भाग खड़े हुए।

    Seeing the enraged host of Mothers crushing the great asuras by many means, the soldiers of the enemies of the gods fled.

  39. Shloka 39#

    पलायनपरान् दृष्ट्वा दैत्यान् मातृगणार्दितान् ।
    योद्धुमभ्याययौ क्रुद्धो रक्तबीजो महासुरः ॥

    palāyanaparān dṛṣṭvā daityān mātṛgaṇārditān |
    yoddhumabhyāyayau kruddho raktabījo mahāsuraḥ ||

    मातृगणों से पीड़ित दैत्यों को भागते देख महादैत्य रक्तबीज क्रोध में भरकर युद्ध करने आया।

    Seeing the daityas, harassed by the Mothers, intent on flight, the great asura Raktabija came forward in fury to fight.

  40. Shloka 40#

    रक्तबिन्दुर्यदा भूमौ पतत्यस्य शरीरतः ।
    समुत्पतति मेदिन्यां तत्प्रमाणो महासुरः ॥

    raktabinduryadā bhūmau patatyasya śarīrataḥ |
    samutpatati medinyāṃ tatpramāṇo mahāsuraḥ ||

    जब उसके शरीर से रक्त की एक बूँद धरती पर गिरती, तो उसी के बराबर एक महादैत्य धरती से उत्पन्न हो जाता।

    Whenever a drop of blood from his body fell to the ground, a great asura of the same size sprang up from the earth.

What Durga Saptashati Chapter 8 means

The powers (shaktis) of the gods — Brahmani, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasimhi and Aindri, the Matrikas or Mothers — join the battle. The Goddess sends Shiva himself as her messenger, and is called Shivaduti.

The demon Raktabija has a boon that every drop of his blood falling on the ground becomes a new demon. Kali spreads her tongue and drinks his blood before it can fall, and the Goddess slays him.

  2. Continue from the previous chapter. If you are reading the whole text, take up where you stopped; many read one or more chapters each day of Navratri.
  3. Recite clearly. Read without hurrying and without stopping in the middle of a chapter. If you cannot read Sanskrit fluently, read the Hindi or English meaning alongside.
  4. Close. At the end of your day's reading, offer flowers and do the aarti.

A common Navratri plan: day 1 — chapter 1; day 2 — chapters 2–3; day 3 — chapter 4; day 4 — chapters 5–8; day 5 — chapters 9–10; day 6 — chapter 11; day 7 — chapters 12–13 (traditions differ). Others read all thirteen chapters in one sitting.
