    mahimnaḥ pāraṃ te paramaviduṣo yadyasadṛśī
    stutirbrahmādīnāmapi tadavasannāstvayi giraḥ |
    athāvācyaḥ sarvaḥ svamatipariṇāmāvadhi gṛṇan
mamāpyeṣa stotre hara nirapavādaḥ parikaraḥ ||

If praise from one who does not know the farthest shore of your greatness is unworthy of you, then even the words of Brahma and the gods fall short. But if no one can be blamed who praises you as far as his understanding reaches, then, O Hara, my effort at this hymn too is beyond reproach.

atītaḥ panthānaṃ tava ca mahimā vāṅmanasayo-
    ratadvyāvṛttyā yaṃ cakitamabhidhatte śrutirapi |
sa kasya stotavyaḥ katividhaguṇaḥ kasya viṣayaḥ
pade tvarvācīne patati na manaḥ kasya na vacaḥ ||

Your greatness lies beyond the reach of speech and mind; even the Veda speaks of you in awe, only by saying what you are not. Who can praise such a one? How many qualities does he have? Whose object can he be? Yet whose mind and words do not turn to your later, manifest form?

    पुनामीत्यर्थेऽस्मिन्पुरमथन बुद्धिर्व्यवसिता ॥

    madhusphītā vācaḥ paramamamṛtaṃ nirmitavata-
    stava brahmankiṃ vāgapi suragurorvismayapadam |
    mama tvetāṃ vāṇīṃ guṇakathanapuṇyena bhavataḥ
    punāmītyarthe'sminpuramathana buddhirvyavasitā ||

    हे ब्रह्मन्, आपने मधु से भरी वाणी, परम अमृतरूप वेदों की रचना की है; तब देवगुरु बृहस्पति की वाणी भी आपको क्या चकित करेगी? हे त्रिपुरारि, मेरी बुद्धि तो इसी प्रयोजन में लगी है कि आपके गुणों के वर्णन के पुण्य से अपनी वाणी को पवित्र करूँ।

O Brahman, you created the Vedas, words rich with honey, the supreme nectar; how could even the speech of Brihaspati, guru of the gods, amaze you? No — O destroyer of the Tripuras, my mind is set on this only: to purify my own speech by the merit of telling your glories.

    tavaiśvaryaṃ yattajjagadudayarakṣāpralayakṛt

    abhavyānāmasminvarada ramaṇīyāmaramaṇīṃ
vihantuṃ vyākrośīṃ vidadhata ihaike jaḍadhiyaḥ ||

Your sovereignty creates, sustains and dissolves the world; the three Vedas speak of it, divided among your three forms (Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra) according to the three gunas. O giver of boons, some dull-witted people raise loud objections to it — objections that please the unfortunate but have no real charm.

    किमाधारो धाता सृजति किमुपादान इति च ।
    अतर्क्यैश्वर्ये त्वय्यनवसरदुःस्थो हतधियः

    kimīhaḥ kiṅkāyaḥ sa khalu kimupāyastribhuvanaṃ

    atarkyaiśvarye tvayyanavasaraduḥstho hatadhiyaḥ
    kutarko'yaṃ kāṃścinmukharayati mohāya jagataḥ ||

    "सृष्टिकर्ता किस इच्छा से, किस शरीर से, किस उपाय से, किस आधार पर और किस सामग्री से तीनों लोकों को रचता है?" — आपके अचिन्त्य ऐश्वर्य के सामने ये प्रश्न अनुचित हैं; फिर भी यह कुतर्क कुछ भ्रमित लोगों को जगत् को मोह में डालने के लिए वाचाल बना देता है।

"With what desire, what body, what means, what support and what material does the Creator make the three worlds?" Such questions are out of place before your inconceivable power; yet this false reasoning makes some misguided people talkative, only to confuse the world.

    ajanmāno lokāḥ kimavayavavanto'pi jagatā-
    madhiṣṭhātāraṃ kiṃ bhavavidhiranādṛtya bhavati |
    anīśo vā kuryādbhuvanajanane kaḥ parikaro
yato mandāstvāṃ pratyamaravara saṃśerata ime ||

Can the worlds, which have parts, be unborn? Can creation happen without a ruler of the worlds? If anyone but the Lord made them, what tools would he use? O best of the gods, it is only the dull who doubt you.

    त्रयी साङ्ख्यं योगः पशुपतिमतं वैष्णवमिति

    rucīnāṃ vaicitryādṛjukuṭilanānāpathajuṣāṃ
    nṛṇāmeko gamyastvamasi payasāmarṇava iva ||

    वेद, सांख्य, योग, पाशुपत मत, वैष्णव मत — इन भिन्न-भिन्न मार्गों में लोग "यह श्रेष्ठ है, वह उचित है" कहते हैं। रुचियों की विविधता से सीधे-टेढ़े अनेक मार्गों पर चलने वाले सब मनुष्यों के एकमात्र लक्ष्य आप ही हैं, जैसे सब जलों का लक्ष्य समुद्र है।

The Vedas, Sankhya, Yoga, the Pashupata doctrine, the Vaishnava way — people follow different paths, each saying "this is best, that is right". Because tastes differ, they take many paths, straight and winding; yet for all of them you alone are the goal, as the ocean is for all waters.

    mahokṣaḥ khaṭvāṅgaṃ paraśurajinaṃ bhasma phaṇinaḥ

    surāstāṃ tāmṛddhiṃ dadhati tu bhavadbhrūpraṇihitāṃ
na hi svātmārāmaṃ viṣayamṛgatṛṣṇā bhramayati ||

An old bull, a skull-topped staff, an axe, a deer skin, ash, serpents and a skull — O giver of boons, these are all your possessions. Yet the gods enjoy all their riches just by a movement of your eyebrow. The mirage of the senses does not mislead one who delights in his own Self.

    samaste'pyetasminpuramathana tairvismita iva
stuvañjihremi tvāṃ na khalu nanu dhṛṣṭā mukharatā ||

One says the whole world is permanent, another that it is all impermanent, a third that it is both, in different respects. O destroyer of the Tripuras, amazed by all of them, I am not ashamed to praise you — for surely talkativeness is bold.

    tato bhaktiśraddhābharagurugṛṇadbhyāṃ giriśa yat
svayaṃ tasthe tābhyāṃ tava kimanuvṛttirna phalati ||

When you took the form of a pillar of fire, Brahma went upward and Vishnu downward, trying hard to find its limits, and could not. Then, O Girisha, when they praised you, heavy with devotion and faith, you appeared to them yourself. Does devotion to you ever fail to bear fruit?

    śiraḥpadmaśreṇīracitacaraṇāmbhoruhabaleḥ
    sthirāyāstvadbhaktestripurahara visphūrjitamidam ||

    दशमुख रावण ने बिना प्रयास तीनों लोकों को शत्रुरहित कर दिया, फिर भी उसकी भुजाएँ युद्ध की खुजली से व्याकुल रहीं। हे त्रिपुरहर, यह आपकी उस दृढ़ भक्ति का प्रताप था जिसमें उसने अपने सिरों को कमलों की पंक्ति की तरह आपके चरणकमलों पर चढ़ाया था।

Ten-headed Ravana easily made the three worlds free of rivals, and still his arms itched for battle. O destroyer of the Tripuras, that was the power of his steady devotion to you — he had offered his own heads like a row of lotuses at your lotus feet.

    pratiṣṭhā tvayyāsīddhruvamupacito muhyati khalaḥ ||

    पर जब उसने आपकी सेवा से बलवान हुई अपनी भुजाओं का बल आपके निवास कैलास पर ही आज़माया, तो आपके अँगूठे के आलस्य से हिलने पर उसे पाताल में भी ठिकाना न मिला। निश्चय ही दुष्ट समृद्ध होकर मोह में पड़ जाता है।

But when he tried his forest of arms, made strong by serving you, against Kailasa itself, your dwelling, you idly moved the tip of your toe, and he could find no foothold even in the netherworld. Surely the wicked, when they grow rich, lose their judgment.

    na taccitraṃ tasminvarivasitari tvaccaraṇayo-
rna kasyā unnatyai bhavati śirasastvayyavanatiḥ ||

O giver of boons, the demon Bana, who made the three worlds his servants, surpassed even the lofty glory of Indra. That is no wonder in one who served your feet: what greatness does not come from bowing the head to you?

    vikāro'pi ślāghyo bhuvanabhayabhaṅgavyasaninaḥ ||

    हे त्रिनेत्र, जब देवता और असुर असमय ब्रह्माण्ड के नाश से भयभीत थे, तब करुणा के वश होकर आपने विष पी लिया। उससे आपके कण्ठ पर जो नीला चिह्न बना, क्या वह आपकी शोभा नहीं बढ़ाता? लोकों का भय मिटाने में लगे रहने वाले का विकार भी प्रशंसनीय है।

O three-eyed one, when gods and demons were terrified that the universe would be destroyed before its time, you were moved by compassion and drank the poison. Does the dark stain it left on your throat not make you more beautiful? Even a blemish is admirable in one devoted to removing the fear of the worlds.

The arrows of Kama, ever victorious, never returned without hitting their mark among gods, demons and men. But, O Lord, when he looked on you as just another god, he became a mere memory (burnt to ash). Insulting the self-controlled does no good.

When you dance to protect the world, the earth trembles at the stamping of your feet; the sky, Vishnu's realm, sees its planets scattered by your whirling, club-like arms; heaven is shaken again and again as its shores are lashed by your flying hair. Truly your might works in strange ways!

The river (Ganga) that fills the sky, its foam made brighter by the stars, looks like a mere drop on your head; yet it has made the earth into islands ringed by oceans. From this alone one may infer the greatness of your divine form.

The earth your chariot, Brahma your charioteer, Mount Meru your bow, the sun and moon your wheels, Vishnu your arrow — why such pomp when you set out to burn the Tripuras, which were mere straw to you? The Lord's will plays with what serves it; it does not depend on anything.

Vishnu offered a thousand lotuses at your feet; when one was missing, he plucked out his own lotus eye to complete the offering. That overflowing devotion turned into the discus (Sudarshana), which stays awake, O destroyer of the Tripuras, to protect the three worlds.

    atastvāṃ samprekṣya kratuṣu phaladānapratibhuvaṃ
śrutau śraddhāṃ baddhvā dṛḍhaparikaraḥ karmasu janaḥ ||

When a sacrifice is over and gone, you stay awake to join the sacrificer to its fruit. How could an action that has ceased bear fruit without worship of the Lord? So, seeing you as the guarantor of the fruit of rituals, people put their faith in the Vedas and devote themselves firmly to action.

Daksha, skilled in ritual and lord of creatures, was the sacrificer; the sages were the priests; the gods were the assembly. Yet, O giver of refuge, that sacrifice was destroyed by you, who are devoted to granting the fruit of sacrifice. Surely a sacrifice without faith harms the one who performs it.

What Shiva Mahimna Stotram means

The Shiva Mahimna Stotram opens with a paradox: Shiva's greatness has no farther shore, so even the gods cannot praise him fully — yet anyone may praise him as far as their understanding goes. The hymn then moves between philosophy and story. It answers sceptics who deny a creator; it declares that all paths — Vedic, Sankhya, Yoga, Shaiva and Vaishnava — lead to Shiva as rivers lead to the ocean (verse 7); and it retells the great Shaiva legends: the pillar of fire, Ravana lifting Kailasa, the drinking of poison, the burning of Kama, the destruction of the Tripuras and of Daksha's sacrifice.

Its later verses praise the syllable Om and Shiva's eight names, and verse 32 gives the famous image of Sarasvati writing for ever with the ocean as her inkpot, never reaching the end of his glories.

How to chant Shiva Mahimna Stotram

  • WhenMondays, Pradosh, Shravan month, Mahashivratri; daily for those who know it by heart
  • TimeAbout 20 minutes for all 40 verses
  • Shorter practiceVerses 1–31 are the stotra proper; 32–40 describe the poet and the fruit of reciting
  1. Prepare. Offer water, milk or bilva leaves to a Shiva linga if you have one, and light a lamp.
  2. Recite steadily. The shikharini metre has 17 syllables per line; follow the transliteration and pause at each line break.
  3. Spread it over days if needed. Some recite ten verses a day and complete it over four days.

Many editions add one to three more closing verses (for example "tava tattvam na janami"). Our text follows the forty verses of the source edition.

Where Shiva Mahimna Stotram comes from

The hymn is attributed to Pushpadanta, a gandharva and devotee of Shiva. The story told in verse 37 and in tradition: Pushpadanta used his power of invisibility to steal flowers from a king's garden for his own worship. The king scattered bilva leaves and flowers offered to Shiva on the path; Pushpadanta unknowingly stepped on them, lost his powers, and composed this hymn to win back Shiva's grace. It is quoted in classical literature from at least the 10th century, and Madhusudana Sarasvati wrote a famous commentary reading every verse as praise of both Shiva and Vishnu.

Verse 7 ("trayi sankhyam yogah") was quoted by Swami Vivekananda at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893, in his own translation: "As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee."
